seedy21 Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 (edited) KENB I don't mind at all , i was going to call it a night anyways :) Sounds like a APIPA Address to the router ATM (another technical term) I think it would be simpler if you can test the software on your flatmates machine. KenB Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 Hi You didn't answer this ... Start > type in .....devmgmt.msc .....Enter > click the + next to Network Adapters. What is listed ? Are there any yellow exclamation marks ? When you typed in 192.168.2.1 did you delete everything else in the address bar ? No just through a ethernet straight from the wall Is this a college network ? How are you connecting the Belkin ? Presumably through a filter to a phone socket? seedy21 Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 Yes they are just seting up the router and then anybody can connect and be on the internet with it with the Network name and password of course :) Quote “It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything.”― Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club http://www.geekstogo.com/downloads/unite_blue.png Need help with your computer problems? natalie Posted November 26, 2012 Author Posted November 26, 2012 Atheros AR5B93 wireless network adapter Broadcom Netlink gigabit ethernet .. Thats what it says and there is no yellow exclamation marks on there. . Yep, i deleted everything else in the address bar when typing in the number. .. Yeah, Im at uiversity and its the internet there. Theres a little plug in the wall and the cable for the belkin goes into that xx Quote
natalie Posted November 26, 2012 Author Posted November 26, 2012 Okay, so even if they were to take their laptop away id still be able to use it :)? x Quote
KenB Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 I think seedy21's suggestion re. using your flatmate's laptop to setup the router will be far easier than doing it manually. However ........... connect the router to the wall connection. I assume that you have an ethernet cable to connect your laptop to the router ? Use this and try to connect to the internet. Let me know the result. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test

natalie Posted November 26, 2012 Author Posted November 26, 2012 That came up with the little yellow triangle, the same as it did when it was wireless x Quote
KenB Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 OK The simplest thing to do is to use your flatmate's laptop connected to the Belkin and then use the CD to set up the router. Once it is set up you should be able to connect both wireless and wired. Give this a try and let us know the results :) I assume that the Belkin is new ? Do other students have a router set up in their rooms ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! KenB Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 Ok I found this - does this apply to you ? ( Leeds University ? ) click here Also .......do other CDs / DVDs work on your laptop ? you must first register your computer’s and wireless router’s MAC address. have you done this ? natalie Posted November 26, 2012 Author Posted November 26, 2012 i dont have a mac.. does that make a difference? Quote
KenB Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 The MAC Address ( Media Access Control Address) is a unique identifier for all hardware that connects to the Network. The MAC Address of the router will be on the label attached to the base or the back. Your PC do the following... Start > type in ...cmd .....( do not hit Enter yet ) Top left of screen right click on ...cmd.exe ...that appears > click on Run as Administrator At the command prompt type in .......ipconfig /all ......Enter ....( there is a space after ipconfig ) At the top "Physical Address" .......this is the MAC Address ....( 12 characters ) Make a note of both. You have to be exact. You may need to register both the wireless adapter and the LAN ( wired ) adapter. If you do I can explain how to get the MAC Address for both.
