Hi folks, a request from Gods waiting room. I run a desktop with Windows 7 64 bit. I have tried to install two modems which would not follow the install pathway and retuned them as I thought that they were defective. Can anyone recommend a suitable basic modem that is easy to install. It does not have to be wireless enabled, even a usb unit would do. Many thanks in advance

Hi, in most cases with Windows 7, an ADSL modem may not work any way, in which case, though the ISP may charge for it, they will supply a router that they will have configured to work with their system and Windows 7.

My ISP, "Supanet" did.

Starbuck and Nev. It would have saved me a lot of frustration and diesel if I had found this board first. Virgin supply a preconfigured unit which is winging its way to me as I write. The downside is that they charge £47 for it, but that is a fair swop for the previous irritation. Thank you once again

I'm in the USA so I can't comment on the UK services. Over here they either charge you a flat fee or a monthly fee. Recently Time Warner Cable went from a free modem to a monthly charge.

I'm with Windstream. Unless you have whole house service replacement for anything that goes wrong with telephone lines or equipment inside or outside the house they charge about that price for a modem after the first one they supply.

This means the first one is free. After that you have to pay for replacements. This is fine if it lasts but I have had them fail due to being crappy and lightening strikes. However with my plan they get replaced for free along with anything else but I do pay a charge for that service.

I can get my own modem but my provider will not offer support on setting it up or trouble shooting. Considering that the price of the modems is about the same either way I just go for the Speedstream modem my provider supports.

At the price you listed it's not a bad price for a modem in my opinion. But I am talking only from my personal experience in the USA. I assume if you use their modem they will offer tech support for it.

I don't know if your provider is offering you a modem/router combination. Mine does but I won't use it because Windstreams provided modem/router combination does not support WPA2 security. How sad is that?

I'm sure the UK members can advise you on this more then me.
