Mark312 Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 Hi to everybody from a new member, come on here hoping for some help... I bought a reconditioned Dell Precision 390 last week, did all the software and program transfers from my old pc - no problems, all ran smoothly.....until yesterday. After being booted up for about an hour, it went to black screen, with the message "Drive 0 not found" I had to power off with the power button, and restart. It worked fine for the rest of that day, but today the same thing happened after being powered up for about 20 minutes. After a reboot it has stayed on all day without a problem. Today I went into Bios and there are 6 drives in the Boot section, but I'm not sure if the hard drive in my pc is Sata or Pata. The device manager shows it as a ST380819AS ATA device. Do I identify the correct hard drive, and then set it to be the main boot drive? Without opening the box, I think there is just one hard drive in there. Quote
seedy21 Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 Hello Mark312 and welcome to FPCH :) Today I went into Bios and there are 6 drives in the Boot section, This is normal, The Boot section lists any Devices that are boot-able so example Hard Drives, CD Drives, Floppy Drives and any USB boot able drives ( if this is supported by your motherboard) Do I identify the correct hard drive, and then set it to be the main boot drive?, ST380819AS ATA device looks to be a Seagate Hard Drive, If this was the only one in the list in Device Manager it looks like the machine is only seeing this Hard Drive. After being booted up for about an hour, it went to black screen, with the message "Drive 0 not found" To me it sounds like a possible failing Hard Drive. Please make a Back-up of the Data and then try this. For Windows XP Click Start >Run>CMD and then click Enter For Windows Vista / 7/ 8/ Click Start > Type CMD> Right Click CMD and Run as Administrator Type in the following chkdsk /f Then click Enter , Type in Y and then click Enter again. Close down the program and then restart. The next time your machine starts up it is going to run a test your File system and hopefully repair any damage to it. Mark312 Posted December 7, 2012 Author Posted December 7, 2012 Thanks, really appreciate your help on this. Funnily enough it hasn't done it today, but I'm not taking anything for granted. I'll do as you suggest and report back my findings. Thanks again Quote
Mark312 Posted December 8, 2012 Author Posted December 8, 2012 (edited) Hi, tried to backup this morning but it did not complete successfully as three files could not be found. The backup folder on the backup device is showing 0 bytes so I know it has not backed up yet. Anyone have any ideas how to get around this? Mark312 Posted December 10, 2012 Author Posted December 10, 2012 Hi Mark312 and welcome to ExTS Did you run checkdisk as advised by seedt21 ? Hi, no I haven't yet, as the advice was to run a backup before running checkdisk, and as the backup did not happen I don't want to risk losing my data.... Quote
KenB Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 I have advised members before to run chkdsk without backing up their system - with no problems. If you want to create an image of your drive take a look here: click here [ it will take an hour or two - but you will have an image of the whole system that will enable you to re-install without loss of data if there are problems - creating an image will copy these too] Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Mark312 Posted December 20, 2012 Author Posted December 20, 2012 Thanks, I've been too busy to do anything about this recently, but I've finally created an image of the hard drive, and just run chkdsk. All went according to plan. When the pc restarted, it just went straight to the desktop with no messages whatsoever, so I assume all is ok? Or does it store a log somewhere for me to view? Thanks for everyone's help so far. Quote
KenB Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Or does it store a log somewhere for me to view? There is no log with CheckDisk. Is everything back to normal now ? Mark312 Posted December 20, 2012 Author Posted December 20, 2012 There is no log with CheckDisk. Is everything back to normal now ? Too early to tell, as the problem I've been having occurred once every day or two. Will monitor over next week or so and report back if any further issues. If problem solved then thanks to all for your help! Quote

Mark312 Posted December 28, 2012 Author Posted December 28, 2012 Hi All, As yet no reoccurrence of the initial problem, so thanks for your help on that one.....however, yesterday and today I had some boot issues - three of what I call DOS boxes - black empty boxes - appeared soon after startup, the title of which were all the same - C:\PROGRA~1\W154FB~1\wmpnscfg.exe. They could be closed down but soon afterwards I had a blue screen and had to restart. The message also popped up from the task bar - "Could not reconnect all Network Drives" Anyone any idea what to check? Quote

WLAN Auto Config .................is this set to Auto ? Hi Thanks, sorry for delayed reply.... Windows Media Player Network Service set to Manual WLAN Auto Config set to Automatic This problem is not going away, if anything it is becoming worse. Had to press Ctrl Alt Del to see the screen this am - booted up to a black screen with a fine line along the taskbar which looked like part of the desktop screen. Ctrl Alt Del brought the desktop back. Quote
Mark312 Posted January 3, 2013 Author Posted January 3, 2013 **Update** Soon after posting, the screen went blue, with the message Kernal_Data_Inpage_Error I left this on for a couple of minutes whilst I found a pen to write the details down, and it then went to a black screen. I hit F1, after which it went to the Client Mac Addr line with all the characters after it, then after a couple of minutes it then said No Boot Filename Received. I then took the attached photo, switched the pc off and rebooted, and so far it has been ok...... Quote
KenB Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 Hi Check your BIOS - Boot Order ( or similar ) Make sure the order is 1. DVD CDROM 2, HDD ( Hard Disk Drive ) It doesn't matter what order the rest is. I suspect that you have something odd as a first boot device. I think - looking at your pic - if you switch on and constantly tap F2 about once per second you will get into the BIOS ( SET-UP ) Look for Boot Sequence / Boot Order or similar. Move around with the arrow keys If you need to change the order it will tell you on screen ( usually up / down arrow ) Don't forget to Save and Exit ( usually F10 ) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Mark312 Posted January 3, 2013 Author Posted January 3, 2013 Thanks. The first boot device was a USB device (not present) which I could not delete but have taken out of the boot sequence. The CD/DVD drive was fourth on the list, after two hard drives, one of which was showing as not present. I have moved the CD/DVD drive to the No.1 slot, and the present hard drive is now No.2. After this I restarted, and everything booted as normal, the two empty black screens still appear (WMPNSCFG).... In the Services screen, should I be setting the WLAN Auto config to Manual or leave as is? Much appreciate your help with this. Quote
KenB Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 So - we still have a problem with WMPNS. Go back to services and right click on Windows Media Player Network Service > Properties click the down arrow next to Start Type Select "Disabled" > OK This shares WMP libraries with Network Devices using plug and play. My guess is you don't use it. Try booting again. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Any idea what to try next? Quote
KenB Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 Right - try this: Open Notepad. Past this in: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences\HME] "DisableDiscovery"=dword:00000002 Save it as wmpnscfg_disable.reg Click on the .reg that should appear on the dektop to write this into the registry. KenB Posted January 4, 2013 Posted January 4, 2013 Save it to the Desktop - easier to access from there. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
Mark312 Posted January 4, 2013 Author Posted January 4, 2013 Save it to the Desktop - easier to access from there. OK done that. Nothing happened so I closed the notepad. Reopened it and it asked me if I wanted to allow this to make changes to the registry, clicked yes. Nothing further of note happened except for confirmation that the registry change had been successful, so I shut down and restarted. Only two empty black windows came up on reboot this time, but the same message popped up from the taskbar saying "Could not reconnect all your network drives". At least it's not a catastrophic problem, but it's clearly not right and a bit of an annoyance.... Quote
KenB Posted January 4, 2013 Posted January 4, 2013 Do you actually have a network drive? An external drive ( server? ) that you access via this machine. Was this machine part of a works network at one time ? Press the Windows Key + E Are there any drive letters with a red X on the left side ? If so - right click > disconnect. Mark312 Posted January 4, 2013 Author Posted January 4, 2013 Do you actually have a network drive? An external drive ( server? ) that you access via this machine. Was this machine part of a works network at one time ? Press the Windows Key + E Are there any drive letters with a red X on the left side ? If so - right click > disconnect. No drives with a red X. No external servers. When I received this machine late last year (a reconditioned pc from an online UK supplier) I tried to network it to two other pcs, one running XP and the other with Win7. As I have not been able to successfully network to the XP machine I did try to set up a second network, which might explain it. TBH I've been concentrating on this machines faults before I try again to set up the home network. I have considered sending it back, but having spent time installing all my files, settings, setting up email etc etc I really don't want to go through all that again. If the Hard drive is on it's way out as somebody suggested earlier, I may just stick another one in next to it and transfer across. What do you think? Quote
