Hi, I have a spare computer that my friend gave me that I keep in the spare bedroom, and it's not used very often. Before she gave it to me they wiped the hard drive and installed windows 7 on it for me, and it was a little slow but worked fine.

I had not used it for a while and turned it on today to use it and the power goes through and the fan works but the light doesn't change from orange to green, just stays orange and I get 3 long beeps, and nothing.

I removed it and hooked it up to my other monitor just in case it was that or a connection, but it still wouldn't work.

Does anyone have any clues as to what could be wrong, or why t has suddenly stopped working.

Thanks

Marilyn

Hi and welcome to ExTS :)

Three beeps on start-up could be the RAM module(s).

Switch off at the wall but leave the plug in to maintain the earth ( ground ) connection.

Take the side panel off and locate the modules.

Touch the bare metal chassis to discharge any static in you.

They look like this: ( or similar )

The white levers at the end need to be folded outwards - the module will released.

Take them out and clean the contacts with a pencil eraser.

Put them back.

Replacement is simply a matter of sitting the module in the slot and then press down on one end until the white lever locks into place.

Do the same on the other end.

Switch on at the wall and try booting the machine.

If you still have problems try the modules just one at a time. ( Don't forget to switch off at the wall )

Let us know the results.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
