Fed Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Hi guys, First time ive posted on here, i need help before i go insane. Im no computer master and hopinge this is pretty straight forward for someone to solve. My computer (Dell Inspiron 530s - running Vista) is picking up the wifi signal in my house but i can't connect with it. I've lived here for a week and had no issues at all with poor signal strength or slow internet speeds, besides this my girlfriends laptop and both our phones are feeding off the wifi with no problems at all. Last night however when i turned on my pc it decided it no longer wanted to get along with the wifi. I've attempted connecting in safe mode with network connections but had no joy. I also tried a system restore to a point when it was fine and had no luck with that either. I haven't been able to turn the router on/off as i live in a shared house and it is based in someone elses room. I had a problem like this before and it turned out McAffee was causing the issue, but this time around i only have microsoft firewalls etc and none of them appear to be causing a problem or getting in the way. Id really appreciate any advice or tips anyone can offer me on the matter Thanks Quote
KenB Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Hi and welcome to ExTS i only have microsoft firewalls etc Not that this will affect your problem - but you DO have an AntiVirus ? You certainly need one. If not we can recommend some good free ones. Start > type in .....devmgmt.msc ....Enter Click the + next to Network Adapters. 1. What is listed ? 2. Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Fed Posted December 12, 2012 Author Posted December 12, 2012 Hi, Wasn't expecting such a quick response! Thanks It lists ''Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter'' and ''Intel® 82562V-2 10/100 Network Connection'' Can't see any exclamation marks or crosses... Quote
KenB Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Hi, Wasn't expecting such a quick response! Thanks we pride ourselves in replying quickly :) If you right click on the monitor icon ( bottom right of screen ) > Connect to a Network Can you see your network? Have you tried connecting ? ( You will need the Network Key ) There is an option here .....Repair Give that a try. Let me know the results. Fed Posted December 12, 2012 Author Posted December 12, 2012 Yeah i can see the network but it just doesn't want to know. ''Connection unsuccessful'' ''this computer is connected to my network but does not have access to the internet'' The ''network and sharing centre'' tells me that Signal strength is excellent but that i have limited connectivity. The diagram above it shows my pc followed by an exclamation mark, then ''unidentified network'', then a ''x'' and then ''internet''. I've tried all the repairs to no avail. I missed out earlier that i use Microsoft Security Essentials which i think covers me okay right? Quote
KenB Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 i use Microsoft Security Essentials which i think covers me okay right? I use this too :) Let's try this: Start > type in ....cmd .....( don't hit Enter ) Right click on the cmd.exe that shows top left of screen > Run as Administrator At the command prompt type ... ipconfig /release ....Enter then ipconfig /renew then ipconfig /flushdns [in all cases there is a space after ipconfig ] Let me know the results Do you know the make and model number of the router ? Fed Posted December 12, 2012 Author Posted December 12, 2012 Shall i try reconnecting after that or do you need some of the data off of that admin screen? Im afraid i dont know much about it at all, i only moved here last week and it is in a housemates room who is currently at work and not back till this evening. All i know is that no one else and none of my other devices are having any wireless issues! Quote
KenB Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Did it release / renew the IP and flush the DNS successfully or were there errors ? Yes - try connecting. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
Fed Posted December 12, 2012 Author Posted December 12, 2012 There was an error whilst renewing - ''An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out. No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected.'' It did successfully flush the DNS though Quote
KenB Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 I have a feeling that your Wireless Adapter may well have died. Click on the "Wireless Test" in my signature below. Download this to a flash drive. Transfer the flash drive to the problem pc and run it (double click on it ) from the flash drive. It will produce a log ( takes a few minutes to complete ) Copy this back to the flash drive then transfer it here please. Fed Posted December 13, 2012 Author Posted December 13, 2012 Curiously enough the laptop I've been using now won't connect with the wifi! Argh! Does this mean there's a chance they both may have picked up a virus from an email or site that I visit??? If so how can I find it? Quote
Fed Posted December 13, 2012 Author Posted December 13, 2012 The laptop won't repair the connection because the following action cannot be completed - disabling the wireless network adapter. Make sure your network adapter is properly installed... Quote
KenB Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 Hi I think you need to try a USB wireless adapter. ( I doubt if it is virus related ) They are relatively cheap and will confirm if it is your present adapter playing up. There are some for under £10 click here To ease your mind re. the virus question download MBAM from here to a flash drive. ( you want the free version ) click here Transfer from the flash drive to the problem computer. Install and run it. It will produce a log. Copy this - save it to the flash drive - and post it here Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
