horace johnson Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 I removed a flashdrive/usbpen after I had shut the PC down. When I next powered up I found that a, The router/livebox would notconnect to the internet. b, there was no picture on the monitor. I have a new router and it has connected to the internet, but I still have no picture or sound on the monitor. I was told that the problem was the Graphic card so I replaced the card and installed the operating disc that came with it. the card is a nVidia gt210 I still had no picture on the monitor. In frustration I took the lead out of the monitor terminal at the back of the tower, and tried it in the terminal attached to the new graphic card. I then got a monitor picture but no sound. I tried the original terminal again and still no picture or sound. I am on XP home edition. Can anyone give me any advice on the fault and how to rectify it please? Apart from no sound, are there any reasons should not use the Graphic card connection? . Quote
KenB Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Hi and welcome to ExTS One thing is confusing me ........ you say you have nothing on the monitor but you managed to install a router software and Video Drivers. ?? You have the nVidia gt210 installed with the monitor connected - graphics are good. Why do you want to use the on-board video ( I assume that the original connection is on-board ? ) It could be that the installation software has disabled the on-board option to avoid conflicts. To check: Start > type in ..... devmgmt.msc .....ENTER Click the + next to "Display Adapters" The GT210 should be listed as well as the onboard. Is there a red X next to the on-board option ? It could also be that the on-board video is disabled in the BIOS. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! horace johnson Posted December 21, 2012 Author Posted December 21, 2012 Hello Ken The router I just plugged in an it worked. I installed the graphic card by plugging the monitor into the terminal on the Graphic card which then gave me a picture on the monitor. I dont particularly want to use the onboard video that you mention, I didnt even know I had one. Since my 1st post on here I have now got the sound back by using another terminal. I have also got the monitor up and working but not in its original vertical terminal, which does not provide a picture. I have got a picture by using the terminal on the graphic board that I have just installed. Where do you type in the link thing you mentioned (devmgmt.msc)? I am on XP home edition. Can anyone give me any advice on the fault and how to rectify it please? Are there any reasons should not use the Graphic card connection? As you will have ascertained by now, I am a complete novice in this field. Quote
KenB Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Hi, The Video Card connection will give you better graphics so the original on-board graphics are not needed. Where do you type in the link thing you mentioned (devmgmt.msc)? Click on Start ( bottom left corner ) then click on "Run" Type devmgmt.msc in the box. Hit ENTER Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
horace johnson Posted December 21, 2012 Author Posted December 21, 2012 Hello again, I found the Display adapters, when you click on this, a drop down text message says "Nvidia GeForce 210" there is no red cross near the text. The top toolbar does show two monitor logos. When you hover the cursor over them one which has a x on it says "uninstall" Hover over the 2nd logo and it displays "disable". this means little to me , but I am interested to hear any comments from you. I have to say that at hte moment I am inclined to leave things as they are, but your advice is welcome. Thanks for your patience on this. Quote
KenB Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 text message says "Nvidia GeForce 210" I assume that the on-board video is not there? It must be disabled in the BIOS. I am inclined to leave things as they are If you are running off the Video Card and things are OK I would leave it as it is. Don't try to fix it if it isn't broken :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
