Hello again all. I'm well & truly in the proverbial dog-house. I decided to remove some seldom used programmes, app. 4, only to find that I have now lost the audio. There's no "speaker" icon anywhere to be seen & trawling through "my computer" "Control panel" "programmes" I can't see anywhere to get it back.

Please advise asap or my Christmas dinner will be a stuffed sparrow?

Thanks in advance.

Hi

If you go to Control Panel then Sounds, there should be a option to show the speaker icon in the system tray.

Thanks for your reply, but I get the message "No audio devise on your computer" This is what I tried before posting on the forum. I have obviously removed the audio programme & not realised.

Nothing is active on the volume control selection page, ie no responce from using the mouse.

Hi, have you looked in device manager?

To get there quickly, click start, then "run", copy and paste this into the box and click OK.

devmgmt.msc

Once the device manager window opens, scroll down the list to "Sound, Video and game controllers", click the little arrow on the left which should expand it, are there any red or yellow question or exclamation marks?

Let us know what you find and we can go from there.

Hi, Nev, The "Sound, Vid, & game controllers" when opened just show a series of speakers, but the "other devices" above that box has a yellow question mark alongside it, & then a ........ connecting to "Multimedia Audio Controller" which also has a yellow question mark.

Hi, a bit confused here, which "Other devices", is there a name to them and what they are?

What we are looking for is a device named Realtek AC97 or Realtek HD Audio, or it may be one of the other sound system makers, especially if they have the yellow mark. A double click will open the window for anything marked with the yellow mark any way, so once opened click on the driver tab, there should be an update driver, try clicking on that first and let us know what happens.

Also there should be a button for "disable", if however it says "enable", click that first.

The "other devices" is the "Multimedia Audio Controller" when opened. I've got to the point where I can see the "enable" button, but clicking that results with a "no device is fitted" clicking "update driver" gives the same result.

Opening the "Sound, Vid, & game controllers" in "device manager" is "Legacy Audio Drivers" Double clicking this gives "This device is working correctly" But there is a trouble shooting box? But not tried that as it says this system is okay.

Panic over, the sparrow survives, I'm back on turkey for xmas dinner. I Googled for the audio problem & found a page for "Windows XP reinstate to a previous date." I followed the text, selected the 20th as a date to return to (I buggered up on the 22nd.) sat back & the system took over. Auto shut down & restart, & Bingo I have sound. I've now tried to find the page that I used to post on here for future ref. ie exact wording I used on Google. But no joy yet, If I do I'll post it. Thanks for your help.

Now I need summat to get my laptop working a bit, nah, a lot quicker.
