Popfoster Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Hi, My small laptop/net book has a problem concerning Internet usage. When connected at my father's house or grandmothers house I can play Minecraft, use SKype and Google Chrome all fine. However at my mothers house (my family all has BT Infinity) I can't log in to minecraft, I can however use Chrome to the extent where I can search however i can't open any pages, it tells me my DNS lookup has failed. Skype messaging works fine however. My iPod and Kindle all connect fine to my mums Internet. When we had BT Infinity before it did the same, but when my dad moved house and took it with him it works fine. However when my mother installed a new Bt Infinity similar problems occur. Thanks for your help. Quote
KenB Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 Hi and welcome to ExTS When we had BT Infinity before it did the same, Was this at your mum's house ? Have you tried unplugging the router for 20 seconds or so then re-connect the power again to re-boot it ? Popfoster Posted January 1, 2013 Author Posted January 1, 2013 Thanks! Yes, it's at my mums house, and it can be a pain because that is where I am the majority of the time. I have tried unplugging the router before and it hasn't made a difference but ill try again :) Quote
Popfoster Posted January 1, 2013 Author Posted January 1, 2013 Yeah we had BT Infinity before and then my dad took it, and the problems were the same as they are now. Quote
KenB Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 Can you connect direct to the router using a cable ? If so - do you get the same problems? This will let us know if it is just a wireless problem or something else. Something else to try: Start > Control Panel >Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections Right click on the Wireless Connection > Properties > Networking > highlight TCP/IPv4 > Properties click Use the following DNS server addresses Then in the 4 boxes type in ...................8-8-8-8 Then in the 4 boxes below ....................8-8-4-4 Apply/OK This uses Google for the DNS. If it doesn't work for you change it back to "Obtain DNS Automatically" Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Popfoster Posted January 2, 2013 Author Posted January 2, 2013 Hi, When I tried the DNS thing, Minecraft showed me the update history, (which it didnt before) however it won't connect to minecraft.net (which you need to log in to play online with friends). My laptop connects to the router with a cable and works okay, albeit slow. However it's in the hall and makes it awkward. I haven't done it recently but when I did IE worked and so did minecraft. Popfoster Posted January 3, 2013 Author Posted January 3, 2013 Okay, today when i tried using google chrome with the cable it wouldn't work, nor IE. I have IE8 if tht helps. I'm going to my dads house tonight, should I run the speed test then? Or do I have to be using the wifi at my mums house? I'm sorry for all the bother, it's causing me so much stress, I've asked many techno friends and family and they've been completely stumped:( Quote
KenB Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 Hi Not really any help to run it at your dad's house if you know it is working properly there. Please confirm that you have a connection at dad's house. Wifi at mum's house Try to run the speed test. Failing that click on the blue Wireless Test at the bottom of this post. It will produce a log. Copy this and paste it here. If you have no connection copy it to Notepad and save it to a flash drive. Transfer the drive to a computer that does have a connection then copy the log here please. KenB Posted January 4, 2013 Posted January 4, 2013 At mum's house Am I right in thinking that you have no connection at all ? Using wired connection with your laptop to the router- Start .....Run .....type in .....cmd ......ENTER At the prompt type in .......ipconfig /all ......ENTER [ space after ipconfig ] You will need to copy the text onto a memory stick. click here Save it to a memory stick and post it here. Do the same with a Wireless connection. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test

RandyL Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Minecraft is an online multiplayer server based game. Anyone with a static IP can set up their computer to act as a game server. If you can not connect to a particular game server then it could be that your mothers IP or IP address range is being blocked by the person who is hosting that particular game. This can be done with Minecraft. Have you tried joining a different game on Minecraft hosted by someone else? If your IP is being blocked but not your User ID you could try turning off your modem for a few minutes then turn it back on. If your mother has a static IP address then this might give her a slightly different address. Just a thought. I'm a little confused as to whether this problem is just related to your laptop. You talk about different computers at different locations. However you could try deleting temp files, cookies etc. Also try a different browser. Again just a thought.
