jw7 Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Hi, I've recently been having problems connecting to the internet wirelessly on my laptop. I can connect to my home network, but it won't connect to the internet. The network comes up as 'Unidentified network', with local only access. I've had this laptop for over 2 years and have been using this network for about 6 months and have never had any issues before. My flatmates laptops aren't having any problems, it just seems to be mine. I've tried some solutions, like disabling abtivirus programs and firewalls, turning off IPV6, etc but nothing's worked so far. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks Quote
KenB Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Hi and welcome to ExTS 1. Can you connect OK with an ethernet cable direct to the router ? Start > type in ......devmgmt.msc ......ENTER Click the + next to "Network Adapters" 2. Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ? 3. Please let me know what is listed there. jw7 Posted January 7, 2013 Author Posted January 7, 2013 Thanks for answering. Using an ethernet cable doesn't seem to change anything. In device manager the following network adapters are listed: Intel® Wireless Wifi Link 5100 Microsoft 6to4 adapter (there are 8 of these) Realtek RTL8102E Family PC1-E Fast Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0) The 6to4 adapters all have yellow marks beside them, but I've disabled all of them and it doesn't seem to make any difference. KenB Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Hi The 6 to 4 adapters are used to transmit ipv6 data through an ipv4 network. Delete the 8 entries ( right click > delete ) Re-boot - is it re-created ? Start > type in .....cmd ........right click on .....cmd.exe .....that appears top left > Run as Administrator At the prompt type in ... ping 127.0.0.1 ...............ENTER You should get 4 packets sent and received. No losses. Do you ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
jw7 Posted January 7, 2013 Author Posted January 7, 2013 Hi, I deleted the adapters and rebooted, I'm still getting unidentified network. I pinged 127.0.0.1 and got 4 packets sent and recieved with no losses. Quote
KenB Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Thanks for that. Please go back to the Command Prompt and type in the following: ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew ipconfig /flushdns You will probably get a message that it cannot be done with the media disconnected. If so try the following: At the command prompt type netsh winsock reset ...... hit ENTER Then type netsh int ip reset..... hit ENTER Then re-boot and try the connection again Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! jw7 Posted January 8, 2013 Author Posted January 8, 2013 Hi, the netsh reset seems to have fixed it, although it does intermittently go back to unidentified network. It's working at the moment though, so I'll come back if it starts acting up again. Thanks so much for your help. Quote
KenB Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 Good news :) I will not mark this as "Solved" yet to give you time to test the system. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
jw7 Posted January 9, 2013 Author Posted January 9, 2013 Spoke too soon, it's back to unidentified network today :( Any more ideas? Quote
KenB Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 So - you cannot connect using a cable to the router or wirelessly ? Is this correct ? Start > type in .....devmgmt.msc .....ENTER Click the + next to Network Adapters. 1. What is listed ? 2. Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ? jw7 Posted January 9, 2013 Author Posted January 9, 2013 I can connect to the network, but not to the internet, wirelessly or with a cable. The network adapters listed are: Intel® Wireless Wifi Link 5100 Realtek RTL8102E Family PC1-E Fast Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0) There aren't any red or yellow marks. Quote
KenB Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 You say that after running the netsh int ip reset you got a connection again ? Can you run this again for me please ? At the command prompt type netsh winsock reset ...... hit ENTER Then type netsh int ip reset..... hit ENTER Do you get a connection now? If it connects again - then you lose it............it could be malware. Download MBAM from here. ( d/l the free version ) click here Install and run it. It may take over an hour to scan. Try the connection again. You may need to run the two netsh commands again. If you are still having problems .... MBAM will have produced a log of the scan. Open MBAM and click on Logs. Open the recent log in Notebook. Copy this and post it here please. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! jw7 Posted January 12, 2013 Author Posted January 12, 2013 Hi, I tried the netsh commands again and nothing changed, so I downloaded MBAM and ran a quick scan. This is what it found: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Trial) 1.70.0.1100 www.malwarebytes.org Database version: v2013.01.11.09 Windows Vista Service Pack 2 x86 NTFS Internet Explorer 9.0.8112.16421 Jenny :: JENNY-PC [administrator] Protection: Enabled 11/01/2013 17:30:35 mbam-log-2013-01-11 (17-30-35).txt Scan type: Quick scan Scan options enabled: Memory | Startup | Registry | File System | Heuristics/Extra | Heuristics/Shuriken | PUP | PUM Scan options disabled: P2P Objects scanned: 228668 Time elapsed: 15 minute(s), 43 second(s) Memory Processes Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Detected: 1 HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\PreApproved\{11111111-1111-1111-1111-110011041135} (PUP.Codec.PR) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. Registry Values Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Folders Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Files Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) (end) I removed the malware it found and then ran a full scan. It didn't find anything else, so I tried the netsh commands again and rebooted. Still no luck :( By the way, whenever I run the netsh int ip reset command this message comes up: Failed to rest echo request - access denied Is this relevant in any way? Quote
KenB Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Failed to rest echo request - access denied We need to know that resetting Winsock and TCP/IP has actually worked. Go back to the command prompt - Use Run as Administrator - and type..... netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt If not .... try it in Safe Mode. Shut down > re-boot. Immediately you switch on start tapping the F8 key about once per second. Select Safe Mode from the list of options. Go to elevated command prompt again and try netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt Let me know if this is successful. jw7 Posted January 13, 2013 Author Posted January 13, 2013 Tried the netsh command and got this message, which I've got before: Resetting echo request, failed. Access denied. Resetting interface, OK! A reboot is required to complete this action. I then tried it in safe mode and got this message: There's no user specified settings to be reset. Still no connection to the internet either way. Quote
KenB Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 Right - one last go at this ..... Go back to elevated command prompt and type in ..... netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log Hopefully this will reset without any problems Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! jw7 Posted January 14, 2013 Author Posted January 14, 2013 I got the same message as before: Resetting echo request, failed. Access denied. Resetting interface, OK! A reboot is required to complete this action. Does this mean it's not actually resetting? Quote
KenB Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 Resetting echo request, failed. Access denied. Does this mean it's not actually resetting? Yes. Try this: Start > type in .....cmd.....right click on the cmd.exe that appears top left > click on Run as Administrator At the prompt type in .....sfc /scannow ....[ there is a space after sfc] hit ENTER This will check the system files. If you get no change with the connection run this scan again. ( sometimes it picks things up on the second scan ) Still no luck .....then go back to the command prompt ( Run as Admin ) and try the netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log again Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! jw7 Posted January 15, 2013 Author Posted January 15, 2013 OK, I ran the scan and it came up with this message: Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. It then said these were in the CBS log, which I tried to get into but was denied access to. i rebooted, ran the scan again and the internet connection did come back, but only for a couple of hours. I then tried resetting the pov4 again but got the same message as before. Quote
KenB Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Hi, You may find this useful: click here If you copy the CBS log to the desktop - can you open it from there ? internet connection did come back, but only for a couple of hours This is a cause for concern. It sounds as if something is corrupting. Let's check the condition of the hard drive ....... Start > type in ....cmd ......right click on the cmd.exe ......click on Run as Administrator At the prompt type ... chkdsk /f .......ENTER [ space before /f ] You will need to re-boot for the scan to be initiated. jw7 Posted January 15, 2013 Author Posted January 15, 2013 Managed to get the CBS log open, here are the files that couldn't be repaired: 2013-01-14 17:16:38, Info CSI 00000178 [sR] Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"settings.ini" of Microsoft-Windows-Sidebar, Version = 6.0.6002.18005, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_INTEL (0), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, hash mismatch 2013-01-14 17:16:38, Info CSI 00000179 [sR] This component was referenced by [l:158{79}]"Package_16_for_KB948465~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.18005.948465-49_neutral_GDR" This came up several times and was also in the results of the second scan I ran. It seems to be having issues with the Windows Sidebar, should I try uninstalling that (if I can)? Quote
KenB Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 should I try uninstalling that (if I can)? You won't be able to delete it - it is an integral part of the Windows Operating System. Run chkdsk /f then sun sfc /scannow See if this makes a difference. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! KenB Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Download the orange Network Test from my signature below to a memory stick. If it ends up in your downloads folder it will be there as "ipcon".
