i recently dumped an old broken hp laptop. i removed the hard drive intending to use it as a spare drive for backups.

from ebay i got a wee caddy but the connections are not a match. i have done this previously a few times and the connectors were all the same.

the hdd is a toshiba

the caddy has a 42 straight pin connector but the hdd has 3 blocks of connectors. a 4 pin then two blocks of flat connectors - 7 & 15.

it seems like i have the wrong caddy. maybe someone could tell me what is the type of caddy i need.

Hi,

There are 2 basic type of hard drive.

ATA - commonly known as IDE

and SATA ( newer type but been around for a while now )

caddy has a 42 straight pin connector

Sounds like an IDE caddy

Take a look here it should make things clearer for you.

Hi, I agree with Ken as I did something similar last year, however in my case I did know my ex laptop drive was IDE and therefore bought an IDE caddy, which is exactly as you describe the long strip of connectors in the caddy you bought, by your description of the hard drive this is indeed a SATA drive so you need to swap the caddy for a SATA one.
