PEV Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 I refer back to my post around this time last year when I posted about assumed AV updates making my PC unresponsive for up to 10 minutes. At the time I blamed AVG 2012 for this assming the activity was updates coming from them. I was advised to quit AVG by a lot of you guys but I kept it as the problem was somewhat reduced with a little help from this forum. OK I am now totaly fed up as the problem seems to be getting worse. It now sems to happen in random bursts as well as on boot up. And the thing is I now know it's not caused by AV updates as I have AVG 2013 free edition which updates automaticaly every day and shows the time of update which does not correspond with the bursts of crippling activity which I take to be some form of updates. Can anyone help please I am uttery sick of this. All options will be considered! Ray Quote

I'm not sure I agree just yet. Have you removed AVG and run without it for a short while to check if the crippling continues? Quote
PEV Posted January 10, 2013 Author Posted January 10, 2013 No I assumed as the updates are listed that it is not AVG. I could try your suggestion but to remove the AV would be leaving my system open to virus/hacking etc Quote
Synapse Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 I could try your suggestion but to remove the AV would be leaving my system open to virus/hacking etc It would in theory. Are you behind a router? If so, you have some protection already. If you are not sure, no worries, but to me, it is the only way to find out. You could Microsoft Security Essentials in its place for a couple of days instead, it comes well recommended. Quote
PEV Posted January 10, 2013 Author Posted January 10, 2013 If I downloaded/installed Microsoft essentials could I keep AVG on my PC for example would I have the option of turning AVG off but not removing it? Quote
PEV Posted January 10, 2013 Author Posted January 10, 2013 Hi Synapse Iwas just looking to download MS Essentials when I read this coment on reviews of MS Essentials. BobbysJune 11th 2012 2 On your advise, I replaced Avast with windows security essentials. Within a day I opened an innocent looking link in my email. The war started! Essentials warned me about the infection, but did not prevent it. Essentials was disabled. I did win the war, but Essentials did not help. Problem 1: No boot time scan Problem 2: Unable to run scan in safe mode. Problem 3: Scan in normal modes does not prevent power management from going into standby at scheduled parameter. Problem 4: Attempting to stop scheduled shutdown depressing any key stops scan and forces restart. Conclusion: Simple to use, simply useless. I downloaded and ran Avast in safe mode and cured the infection. New Trojan Horse link: crm43rddemocratsu.org. forces several critical trojans on plus "rescueperformance.in" trojan. Having heard nothing but good said about this AV I am flabagasted! and don't think I will now change to MS Essentials - even for a couple of days! Other users of MS Essentials might be more than interested in this!! Ray Quote

Sorry, but no, one A/V at a time. Disabling is not the same as removal, there may be one or two services running in the background when disabled. MS Essentials is in general well thought of, if you don't want to install it, that's ok, why not try Avira, again it is well thought of and has a light footprint on your system If we find the issue is not related to AVG, you will know and we can look elsewhere for issues. KenB Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Just for information ..... I know Starbuck uses Essentials and I do too. I have never had an issue with it. Plastic Nev Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 As further information, I also use MSSE and do have a positive story. I was doing some local research of businesses in my area, when clicking on would you believe a computer dealer and repair service website, which is obviously infected, MSSE stopped and quarantined a trojan. I checked, informed Starbuck by PM of the trojan and type, after deleting or emptying the quarantine, then ran a scan using Malwarebytes and a scan using MSSE, all found to be clear and Starbuck agreed that there should be no real reason for further concern. So I can at least report that Microsofts Security Essentials worked OK for me and continues to do so. Please remember also that no single antivirus can stop everything, there is new threats daily and even your AVG may not stop a new one, or even an old one that has been missed by the guys writing the malware data bases. Safe use of the internet is the best defence, and treat all with some suspicion. Even I should have been a little more careful of that website. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems?
