computernub1213 Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 So I think I just failed pretty badly. I bought gtx 680 and had 550 ti. Seems like I don't have enough power cables, so my first question is that do I even need to have exact amount of those(probably yes...) and how can I get more? Old one only had just one of those, new one has 2(with the box came a cable that fits in the spot but I cant plug it in any spot in my pc...). Second thing is that my monitor won't work with it. Could this be because of that previous problem? Old card had a spot where I could plug my monitor directly, this one doesn't. I have no clue what information you need so just tell me what I should tell you.. Pls help :( Quote
computernub1213 Posted January 17, 2013 Author Posted January 17, 2013 The thing that wonders me that there is only one power cable, which was enough for my gtx 550 ti tough, and the computer is pretty good. Inte i7-3770, 18gb RAM, cards you know... So do I need new power supply with more cables? Or do I just need to buy one of those cables that I put in the one that I have and it creates more of them? (dont know exact word) Quote
KenB Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Hi and welcome to ExTS Are these your new Video Card specs ? click here If they are your new card needs at least a 550 Watt PSU - what have you got ? I don't have enough power cables I assume that you are referring to the 2 6 pin PCIe power connectors needed for this card ? This one ? http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/pcie6index.jpg You can use 2 Molex connections to create the missing 6 pin connection. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/pimg/CB-033-OK_27231_350.jpg To answer your question - yes .....your card does need 2 power connections. Second thing is that my monitor won't work with it. You need to sort out the power issues and this may resolve itself. computernub1213 Posted January 17, 2013 Author Posted January 17, 2013 This is the card that I bought and currently have right next to me... http://www.tietokonekauppa.fi/?koodi=98918 (tekniset tiedot= technical information in finnish) Atleast to me it's pretty much the same card I have that 6 pin cable indeed, the card needs one 8 pin and one 6 pin. With the card there came this cable that transforms 2 6 pin cables into 8 pin cable. It doesn't actually tell my power supply in the page where I bought it.. But in ASUS website the same model has 500w. Is upgrading power supply hard? And how much? And will it have chanse to be failure like this card, for example not fitting in my case or not having all the wires for the other stuff in it? Quote

And like I said there came this cable that transforms two 6 pins to one 8. I need to upgrade my power supply? Quote
KenB Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Hi, This confirms the specs for your card click here You can create the 8 pin connection from 2 Molex connections click here This review suggests 550 Watts for your card click here Is upgrading power supply hard? No - it is relatively easy. What size PSU do you have at the moment ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! computernub1213 Posted January 18, 2013 Author Posted January 18, 2013 (edited) I don't know the exact sizes like from the website where I bought the machine since it doesn't say it. Tough I did open the case and did measure it myself. This is what I got: 14 cm wide 8,5 cm high 15 cm "long"(deep? don't know the right word) And the stuff that you can see behind the computer was in the left side of the power supply while I measured I did already check few power supplies, is this good? It is 600w which should be enough for the card? It also has lots of cables," - 1 x 24pin ATX, - 1 x 8pin ATX 12V, - 2 x 6+2pin PCI-E ". Also the sizes are pretty good from what I can tell. http://www.jimms.fi/tuote/CP-9020048-EU In the picture I can't see any wires, is this just the picture and the real one will have them? If not then do I have to install all the wires inside that and the case? Sounds pretty hard :/ Edited January 18, 2013 by computernub1213 Quote
KenB Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 What size PSU do you have at the moment ? By this I meant ......the Wattage ............sorry for the confusion :) It should say on a label on the PSU itself. is this good? It is 600w which should be enough for the card? Corsair is a very good make for PSUs It will be enough to run the card - yes. In the picture I can't see any wires, is this just the picture and the real one will have them? Yes - the one they deliver to you will have all of the wires. Replacing the PSU is relatively easy. If you are a little unsure use a digital camera to record each stage. The connections will only fit in one place - you cannot get them wrong. The dimensions you have given ( 150x140x85 ) are the standard sizes for a PSU so the Corsair will be a straight swap. You may not need it if your own PSU has enough Watts. Take a look at the label. :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
computernub1213 Posted January 18, 2013 Author Posted January 18, 2013 I checked the label, there was lots of different watt numbers but highest was 390W. I am pretty sure I need new one. Could you give me a good youtube tutorial for changid it? I didn't find any good ones, most of them were like 3+ year old and the machines were nothing like these days. Quote
KenB Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 highest was 390W. I am pretty sure I need new one Yes - I think you do if you are to use that card :) Take a look here: This shows a PSU that has the cables lose and need to be connected to the PSU body. You will see that this is simple too. Let me know what you think. Ignore the "Mindpower" advert for the first 10 seconds :) This suggests that the cables come connected .... http://www.fatwallet.com/static/attachments/115847_screenshot2011_09_27at4_12_24pm.png One more thing ...... Is your Hard Drive and DVD Drive SATA or IDE ? IDE has a broad grey data cable to each one ................SATA does not. computernub1213 Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 (edited) Does not look too hard and the one I will buy will have the cables in already? I think I will buy that one I already mentioned (http://www.jimms.fi/tuote/CP-9020048-EU). Thanks for the help :) No idea about the last question tough. KenB Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Let us know how you get on. You didn't answer this.... Is your Hard Drive and DVD Drive SATA or IDE ? IDE has a broad grey data cable to each one ................SATA does not. The PSU you are buying is for a SATA hard drive and DVD drive Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! computernub1213 Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 I honestly don't know. I did check in there again and there was only like red black and yellow cables... Anyways I ordered it already so I guess I can just hope it fits :p Quote
KenB Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 red black and yellow cables That is fine - this is a SATA connection which is what you have ordered :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! computernub1213 Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 So the new power supply arrived and I managed to install it pretty easily. Card is showing 2 green lights and working fine. There is still one MAJOR problem... When I use it, my monitor wont work. There is no D-Sub spot in the card where I could directly put the cable from my monitor. When I put it in the one in the computer it won't work. I can hear all the windows startup sounds tough... Does this mean I have to buy new monitor??!! Or are there some form of calbes that can change this d-sub into dvi? Quote
computernub1213 Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 Actually in the manual of the card there is picture that shows some weird thingy that turns D-Sub into DVI. So it is possible I guess, just don't know the name of such a part so I can search for one. Quote
computernub1213 Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 (edited) Something like this but the other end should be DVI. http://www.jimms.fi/tuote/DP-VGA5 Other one I found http://www.jimms.fi/tuote/DVI-3 So far the best one? http://www.jimms.fi/tuote/5706470038660 Edited January 23, 2013 by computernub1213 Quote
computernub1213 Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 Is this basically the same? computernub1213 Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 Oh man, checked the connectivity of that card and found out that there is no D-Sub spots in the card. KenB Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Hi, Please confirm .... is this the back of your new Video Card ? http://rog.asus.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/ASUS-GTX-680-4GB-DCII-display-799x347.jpg If so .... the connections shown are female ( no pins ) Your adapter would need to be a male DVI (pins) to VGA adapter. See here: click here The first adapter you linked to is a female DVI - you must get the correct one. The Belkin is the correct connection. computernub1213 Posted January 24, 2013 Author Posted January 24, 2013 I didn't know was it female or male end so I just took both :p Got it plugged and everything is working like a dream now! Thanks so much for the help, I really appreciate it. If some friend of mine will ever have problems with computers I will guide them here for sure :) Ps. I had nvidia card before, so is it fine to use the old drivers? I have latest one. Or do I have to use the cd? (GTX 550ti was the old one) Quote
