ludo001 Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Hi, I´m using external HDD (seagate - P/N 9SF2A4-500, FAT 32) to store music, pictures and videos - sorted in 3 folders of that names. HDD works fine, when connected to TV or PS3. But when I connect it to the computer (Dell latitude e5520) I only see shotcut "System volume information", and not music, video and picture folders. On TV I see 2 new folders "Recycled" and "msdownld.tmp". Could anyone help me to get to files on HDD from my computer? Quote
Plastic Nev Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Have you looked either in "Computer", or "Disk management" and does it actually show up in there? If in "Computer" right click and select properties of it and let us know what it says. For Disk management with the external drive not connected, a quick way to get there is press the Windows flag key and the letter R, this will open the "Run" command box, then copy in = diskmgmt.msc Then click OK. Then connect the external drive, it should then show up, this is a screen shot of my small 180GB drive connected, (highlighted in Yellow) in my shot it shows NTFS as "File system", if yours is still formatted as FAT32 it should say so, I am hoping it doesn't say RAW. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/plasticpig/DiskManagement.jpg Let us know what you find please, Nev. Plastic Nev Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Hi, well everything shows up OK as far as used space is concerned, I can only guess now and ask does your TV show you the file type and extensions, they just may not be of a type that Windows can recognise without perhaps some third party software, but to know that we need to know the file type and extension. ludo001 Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 Hi. On the HDD I have only common types of files - .avi, .mkv, . mp3, .flac, .jpg, .mov, ..... I´m not sure if unknown type of extension will be the problem, because all I have on HDD I had in computer before without any problem. And if it would be unknown type of file wouldn´t I see at last the (maybe empty) folders? L. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Hi, curiouser and curiouser, as Alice said. OK it should show you those if there is nothing else after the AVI, jpg, MP3 etc. lets see what is actually happening first. When you connect the hard drive, does autoplay open a window? If so can you show us a screen shot of what does come up please. If no window opens, click on Windows explorer and open that, the "F" drive should show there under Computer, right click on the drive, does it show "Open Autoplay", It will of course be in your language but if it does show, click on it and then show us a screen shot please. if you do see the autoplay window what then opens if you click "Open folder to view files" ? In Windows explorer an ordinary left click on the "F" drive should also open the folders anyway. Let us know what you see whichever way you go. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? ludo001 Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 Hi. So when I connect it, autoplay opens this window: then, after clicking on open folder it opens this: autoplay via windows explorer makes the same. Plastic Nev Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Hi, OK, it just might be a matter of permissions, open that Properties window again, then click the security tab as in this screen shot. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/plasticpig/Diskpropertiessecurity.jpg In the top listing you should see various types of user, in my case I clicked on Administrators, for myself. In the bottom list as in the screen shot, there should be the row of ticks. If not, click the edit button, select which account you wish to have those controls in the top list, then place ticks in all boxes, click apply, then OK. A window should open showing security, and changing settings, or similar. let it run and all should be OK. Hopefully that is all is wrong. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? ludo001 Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 Hi i don´t have that options in Properties window. It looks like this: First line: Ready Boost/Previous versions/Customize Second line: General/Tools/Hardware/Sharing I don´t have security tab there. Is there other way to get there? L Quote
KenB Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Hi ......just jumping in :) The "Security" Tab is "created" by the rshx32.dll Start > Computer > C: > Windows > System32 Scroll down and look to see if rshx32.dll is there. If it is right click on it > Properties > Security Under "Allow" for "System" - "Administrators" - "Users" I have the following 2 boxes ticked.... "Read and Execute" "Read" There are no ticks in the "Deny" column. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! ludo001 Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 Hi KenB! I found rshx32.dll and opened the tab. It looks the same as yours - "Read and Execute" and "Read" ticked. Then I continued by highligting "administrators" and clicking Edit. But I can not tick anything else in Allow column (nor in Deny) as Nev suggested. KenB Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Hi try this: Start ....type in .....cmd ......right click on the cmd.exe that appears top left of screen > Run as Administrator At the command prompt type ..... regsvr32 rshx32.dll ............hit ENTER [ there is a space after regsvr32 ] This will re-register rshx32.dll Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! ludo001 Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 Hi. so i´ve done it, but I can´t tick it anyway. And now there are also no ticks on "Read and Execute" and "Read". KenB Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Hi You are looking at the System32 folder itself. You need to go inside the folder to rshx32.dll Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! ludo001 Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 sorry, you are right. But still only those two are ticked and can´t tick anything else. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 At least it looks like we are going in the right direction, though now beyond my limits of knowledge, I will have to leave you with Ken and hopefully it can be resolved for you. KenB Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 and can´t tick anything else. Those two items ( no others ) are ticked in mine too. Go back to Nev's post #8 and see if "Security" is available now please. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! ludo001 Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 No, it isn´t. Still it looks like in my post nr 9. L. Quote
KenB Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Try this: Start > type in .....cmd.......right click on .....cmd.exe ..( top left of screen ) > Run as Administrator At the command prompt type in ...... sfc /scannow .......ENTER There is a space after sfc This will need a restart. This will check the system files. If there is no difference after the first scan - run it again as it often picks up things on the second run. ludo001 Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 Hi. I performed first scan, then restarted, performed second scan and immediately (at the same window) the third. Result was always Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations. L. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Hi, after all that has been done so far is the data now there or still not showing? I must admit, I forgot this was in FAT32 file system and Maynard is correct though, which makes me annoyed at myself for not spotting that earlier. I am however still lost now as to how we can access those files though, but hopefully Ken may have another idea. There is software available and free, but that is usually only used for retrieving deleted files, and may not even work in this case. So I am reluctant to suggest that until Ken has had another look. ludo001 Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 Hi Nev! No, nothing changed. In the meanwhile I tried to check HDD with antivirus (no virus found), and as I saw the scan progress, it scanned all the files one by one. Therefore I believe there must be some access if AV found it? Quote
Synapse Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Try going in to the Folder Options and setting the defaults to view all files, including hidden Operating System files. Quote
Armageddon Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Hmmmmmmm I know its a bit left field but have you tried live booting a linux disk and then attaching the drive , then seeing if you can access the files that way Quote Google is your friend We are all members helping other members.
