mil1638 Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Hi all, I am having an issue with my Emachine E620 not booting with Vista. Normally i leave the laptop in sleep mode but it seems that during the night it has automatically installed some updates and then shut down(guessing). This has happened before but i was able to sort issue previously. I have since been unable to boot up. It gets as far as the splash screen and goes no further than the scrolling bar. Originally i was able to access the advanced boot menu so was able to attempt Windows repair, unsuccessfully. i have tried starting in safe mode ( all variations), again unsuccessfuly. After several attempts i am now unable to even access advanced menu and am left only with acess to BIOS menu and Multiboot menu. I have downloaded 'easyRE' for Vista and also a Vista repair disc from Neosmart but the laptop will not respond to,boot from or recognise either.I also downloaded a LiveCd from slitaz which run successfully for a short time, not long enough for me to save any data, then crashed and will not reload This machine was inherited from my late father in law and i have no system recovery discs, nor am i able to source any online. I am at a complete loss as to what course of action i should next take and any advice would be greatly appreciated. Emachine E620 AMD Athlon 2650e Phoenix BIOS MS VISTA Quote

KenB Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Found it ..... PCHF click here Samuria is assisting. You are considering buying Win8 ( PCHF ) Your machine is not booting. You may buy this and not be able to install it. ( just a thought ) I would be inclined to check the hard drive condition. Take it out and connect it to another pc. From here you can - if it is recognised - access your data and run some tests. I can explain how if necessary. mil1638 Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 Ok so... Got HDD out and wired up to desktop (had to go buy new caddy as old one inop :( ) Run MBAM and Mcafee just to be sure no infections were present. All clear. Downloaded and run WinDFT and all seems good I have full access to the HDD and can explore all files Not sure how to run chksdk from external hard drive so any advice there would be much appreciated Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware www.malwarebytes.org Database version: Windows 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Internet Explorer 9.0.8112.16421 19/01/2013 17:49:59 mbam-log-2013-01-19 (17-49-59).txt Scan type: Quick scan Objects scanned: 136722 Time elapsed: 2 hour(s), 34 minute(s), 47 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: (No malicious items detected) Folders Infected: (No malicious items detected) Files Infected: (No malicious items detected) It would seem to me that the HDD appears to be good and therefor Vista is to blame unless of course it is a RAM fault. I have to admit to being out of me depth now so could really do with some pointers as to what to do next Quote

mil1638 Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 Have tried 'chkdsk' for 'f' drive but keep getting message '' access deiend as you do not have suffient privilage'' Quote
Plastic Nev Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Hi, for chkdsk to run you need administrator privileges. To get that for an external drive I am not too sure about, easy for your internal as that is just a right click and choose to run as administrator. Quote Need help with your computer problems? mil1638 Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 Ok, chkdsk , chkdsk /f , chkdsk /r complete without showing any problems Since i have full access to all files on HDD is there any file i can delete, alter, replace in order to bring windows into an operational condition? Quote
KenB Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Try booting again. if you get the same problem - shut down. Take one stick of RAM out and leave the other in. Try booting again. If the problem is still the same - swap the RAM modules over and try running off the other one. ========== Do you get any POST beeps when you try to boot up ? If so - how many ? ========== Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
mil1638 Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 Will try that now. No beeps when booting unless i press function keys to many times Quote
KenB Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 OK - oh by the way ........the drive checks seem OK :) Did it used to beep when you booted up ? mil1638 Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 nope, not that i can remember. Saying that, i normally leave it in sleep mode so rarely boot up Quote
KenB Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Try the RAM :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
mil1638 Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 RAM swapped in every concievable position, unless both are done, they would seem ok. HDD seems to be good. I doubt, given the symtoms, that the motherboard is goosed ( my personal inexperienced guess) I am seriously tempted now to through it out the window and hope it lands in the pond Quote
KenB Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 You said this in your first post .... I have downloaded 'easyRE' for Vista and also a Vista repair disc from Neosmart but the laptop will not respond to,boot from or recognise either. Is the CDROM the first in the Boot Order in the BIOS ? If not - move it up and try the disks again. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
mil1638 Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 BIOS is set to boot from CDROM, have tried both discs mentioned above sveral times and also UBUNTU and SLITAZ LIVECD. I have even made another copy of each in case there was a chance the discs were faulty in some way. When it statrs to boot i can here the cd/dvd drive spin for a few seconds then i stops and splash screen/scrolling bar appears again Quote
KenB Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 If it is not running from the disks it could be a problem with the CDROM drive itself. It would have looked at the disk first and, it there was an Operating System or something to boot from there, it would run that first. Obviously it is not "seeing" what is on the disk. From the Advanced Start-up Menu ( F8 ) have you tried "Repair your Computer" ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! mil1638 Posted January 21, 2013 Author Posted January 21, 2013 Was wondering about cdrom drive myself, i do know it 'was' working after this problem appeared as i was able to run slitaz, albeit for a short time. So will check that out. As for 'repair your computer' i did try that originally but no longer have the use of the F8 function. I simply cannot get into the advanced boot menu whatsoever. Just to top things of nicely this week i managed to get the "your pc has been blocked by interpol" virus on my desktop. Lord knows why unless it was on my laptop hard drive. Sorted now though thankfully Quote
KenB Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Do you have an option to Boot from USB Device in the BIOS ? If you do you - and if you can get hold of an external CDROM Drive - you could try your repair disk from there. Alternatively ..... Take the hard drive out and connect it to another machine using a 2.5 inch hard drive to USB adapter ( or enclosure ). From there we can run some tests on the drive itself. mil1638 Posted January 21, 2013 Author Posted January 21, 2013 Ok, have got laptop stripped back to barebones again and after several attempts have managed to get it to boot livecd. I was presented with the windows installation screen. I have gone through the language, time section and am on the "system recovery option" screen. What can do from here? can i do 'hot installation ' of HDD and try to repair ir restore? I can not thank you enough for your patience in this : Quote
mil1638 Posted January 21, 2013 Author Posted January 21, 2013 just to add to that... I have shutdown and replaced HDD and the laptop will no longer boot from cd. I have set BIOS to boot from cd first. Does this mean anything? Im lost : Quote
