White screen

Hi I have a acer 5630. The problem with it is that the screen seems to be playing up with a this white screen at first a was thinking it was the LCD or the LCD cable but when u turn it off for a while and turn it on it was turn on and work fine for about 5-10 mins then the screen would start flash flashing (one every 1-2 mins) then the white screen comes back and I can do anything, then when I would try and turn the computer on I still get the white screen the second i turn the computer on but for some reason I removed the hard drive and it turn fine apart from it not having a harddrive in it to work.

 

Any help with this would be great.

This is a laptop ?

 

If you boot up in Safe Mode does it do the same ?

Switch on > tap F8 about once per second > select Safe Mode from the list of options

Hi thanks for your reply. Just ran it in safe mode and it seems fine, been that caught up on it bending a LCD cable problem, so could this mean it could be a hardware problem or virus problem.

It is more likely to be a software problem.

 

Start > Run ....type in ......devmgmt.msc ......ENTER

 

Click the + next to the devices listed.

Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ?

 

Also .....

 

Use F8 again > try "Last Known Good Configuration"

Update the screen has just started playing up after 10-15 mins with red and blue marks on the screen, everything seems to be working fine apart from this, could it be the graphic card on the way out as it is a laptop and its on the motherboard is the laptop a goner? ( sorry if am jumping the gun)

It probably isn't a card as such, but a chip.

 

Try the following....

 

Go back to device manager and click on the + next to Sound / Video / Game controllers

Right click on the Graphics Device > Update Hardware Software

Let it search automatically for this.

 

If you are in Safe Mode you probably will not have an internet connection.

 

F8 again > Safe Mode with Networking should solve this.

I doubt that this would affect the graphics.

That is a difficult question to answer.

Re-installing is usually a last resort.

 

Did you try up-dating the drivers ?

 

Also - what is listed in Device Manager if you click the + next to Sound / Video / Game controllers ?

Hi there is nothing listed under sound video etc.. Thinking about formatting the harddrive. Could it be a virus?

Tried to update the drivers nothing, just the same. If I was to update my os to windows 7 would u recommend it and would u go for the 64 bit or 32 bit?

sounds like the gpu is on its way out graphics card acer as a problem with them just thought id mention it regards ?

Download and install the Chipset drivers

There are 2 VGA drivers.

Try the Intel one first.

 

Let me know the results.

It is a possibility - we are just trying all of the other options first.

A card is much easier.

Yours will be a chip and this, to be honest, is a specialised job as they are soldered in directly to the motherboard.

 

Do you have a monitor that you could connect ?

If so - we can determine if the problem is directly linked to the graphics chip.

Sorry for the late reply. I have connected the laptop to a monitor and its worst than ever. I have also installed windows 7 which has done nothing to help.

That just about confirms it.

It is related to your graphics - it is not wiring.

 

You said earlier that there was nothing listed under "Display Adapters" in Device Manager

Please go back ( devmgmt.msc ) click the + next to Display Adapters and let me know what is listed.

Also - are there any yellow exclamation marks ?

Have you checked your LCD cable and the inverter, as it may be the issuse of these parts? And also you can get the two parts from *Removed link* Edited April 11, 2013 by Vr5fx
