Chrisrules334 Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 (edited) Hi all, I am new to the forum so I am not sure what you will need to know to diagnose the issue. My internet randomly drops (convniently when I have lots of money on a poker hand...) and reconnects very shortly after. I am using Wifi, I have an 'Excellent' connection to it, I am using Windows XP, It only happens to my laptop - my phone, desktop, ipad all work okay whilst I have the issue. Please ask for any information you require to solve this issue, Thanks Chris Edited January 24, 2013 by Chrisrules334 Quote

KenB Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 Hi, I suspect that the problem lies with your wireless adapter itself. If you can borrow or buy a USB wireless adapter and install this I suspect that you will get a stable connection. click here Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Chrisrules334 Posted January 25, 2013 Author Posted January 25, 2013 Thank you, for my own knowledge, what led you to this conclusion? Also, my wireless adapter is built into my laptop, is there anyway of fixing this? Quote
KenB Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 what led you to this conclusion? The fact that the connection was dropping - then coming back - and dropping again. Normally with this type of problem it turns out to be the router - but you say other connections are stable ..... so this rules out the router. If it was a setting that was wrong or software that is corrupt you would not get a connection at all. Logically - this leads us to the adapter itself. Being electronic it could be a failing component that "drifts in and out ". my wireless adapter is built into my laptop, is there anyway of fixing this? It is integrated onto the motherboard - no easy fix I am afraid. With the wired connection .........you could try this: Start > Run ....type in ............devmgmt.msc .........ENTER Click the + next to "Network Adapters" Right click on the wireless adapter > Update Drivers Let Windows do this automatically. What is listed as the wireless adapter ? Any yellow exclamation marks ? I would still get hold of a USB Adapter .............this will prove me right or wrong but is always handy to have anyway :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Chrisrules334 Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 No updates are available, or any exclamation marks. I have disabled and re enabled Windows Zero configuration, and since then I have had no issues. If I do start having any issues again I shall borrow my girlfriends USB adapter and test that out, Thank you for your help! Quote
KenB Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Hi For some reason you reported the last post ?? This sends an email to all Moderators and Admins :) Windows Zero configuration This shouldn't be disabled - and there is no way I know of that it will be able to enable itself if it is disabled. Malware could possibly do this. Download MBAM from here: click here You want the FREE version. Install > Update > Run it It will produce a log. Copy this and post it here please. Your reported post contained this: I have downloaded some software which disable and re enables windows zero configuration, You don't need software to do this. What was the software that you downloaded ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Chrisrules334 Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 It's called 'Wireless fiXP' it's from a trusted source (Overclockers & many other websites suggest it), all it does (I believe) is run the script to enable (to gain a connection) and once one is obtained it disables it (to stop the issue) - Per google results the Wireless Zero configuration causes wireless to randomly drop out - though I am not sure of the reasons why. I have Avast/Windows defender and another Spyware/Malware program installed on my PC so I would hope it would pick it up. Quote
KenB Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 so I would hope it would pick it up. The best anti-Malware program out there is MBAM. The only way to know for sure is to run it. If you have Wireless Zero Configuration disabled ( by running this software ) what are you using to run and configure the network connection ? Check in Services again - what is it set to ? Take a look here: click here Don't do anything with this yet ...... Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Chrisrules334 Posted January 27, 2013 Author Posted January 27, 2013 Okay so Malware scan found 2 items, none of which are the file I am referring to (an iTunes related file and some adware). So basically it enable it to get a connection then it disables it once one is made (it is no longer needed once connected) the only issue is when the router dies, and then it cannot find a connection so I must re enable it and find one, and then disable again. Though this is day 3 without a disconnect which is good! Quote
KenB Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Though this is day 3 without a disconnect which is good! If you are not getting any drop in connection then I suggest we don't touch anything.
