hi all,

i have just built myself a new pc to replace my old rig.

gigabyte b75m d3h mobo rev 1.1

intel i5 3470 @ 3.2ghz cpu

coolermaster gx 550w psu

8gb ddr3 1333mhz ram

seagate baracuda 1tb 6gbs hdd

win 7 pro 64 bit

my problem:

at the moment i am running dual monitors from the onboard graphics which i think is intel hd 4000 or something.

i have a nvidia 440gt spare graphics card i want to put in but when i plug it into the pcie slot the computer wont boot. i get the fans running (and the gpu fan) but no post beeps or anything else. i know the card is good because have tested it in my other pc.

ive looked through the bios for anything i can enable but found nothing.

any advice?

Hi

Connected to the card do you get anything on screen at all?

Switch on ....tap F8 about once per second .....at the Advanced start-up options select Enable VGA Mode ( assuming you can get this far )

After it boots up ...

Start > type in ...... devmgmt.msc .....ENTER

Click the + next to Display Adapters

Is the card listed there ?

If not - install the drivers for it.

yes onboard video

even if i keep monitor plugged into onboard video and insert graphics card (with no monitor plugged into card) i dont get a display. its as if the computer moves the card to default display but i have no idea how id change it

Is there an option in the BIOS to disable the on-board video or set the 440GT as the Primary Video Device.

This will probably be under "Advanced "

I think the BIOS is looking for the on-board option and is not set to auto - detect the card.

There is an option in the BIOS to define first display device on boot.

Boot with the onboard video connected, go in to the BIOS.

Look in Peripherals, got to Init Display First, and set it to PEG - that will look for your PCI-E card first. Also disable the onboard display, which looking at the manual is the option below Init Display First.

Save BIOS settings and shutdown.

Fit your video card, connect to the monitor and reboot. Hopefully it works.

If not, you may have to reset your BIOS to get up and running with onboard video.

nice 1 synapse! your instructions were spot on. am i right in thinking i cant use onboard graphics and graphics card at the same time i.e to have 4 monitors?

note to self..... always read the instruction manual! :/

Glad you are getting somewhere. I don't know the answer to your dual video card scenario.

You could try re enabling onboard video, see what happens, and be prepared to go back a step to get it working again, if it goes wrong.
