KenB Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Hi You can update your Java here: click here It should just update what you have. Click on "Do I Have Java" to verify that you need to update. Starbuck Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Congratulations! You have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 39). Where did this come from? The latest version is Java 7 update 13. Here's what you should do: Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 7 Update 13 and save it to your desktop. Scroll down to where it says "Java SE 7 Update 13". Click the "Download JRE" button to the right. Accept the license agreement. select 'Windows x86'offline or 'Windows x64.exe' (depending on whether you are running a 32 or 64 bit system) from the list. Save the file to your desktop. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java. Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed. Then from your desktop double-click on downloaded icon to install the newest version. Quote Member of:UNITE
slab288 Posted February 3, 2013 Author Posted February 3, 2013 (edited) Hi Starbuck........how's things? To answer your question "Where did this come from"? It came from the java.com site after I had clicked the "Do I Have Java?" button. Now hopefully I haven't caused any problems BUT whilst trying to carry out your instruction I was on the phone and talking to some all at the same so what I actually did was:- Save Java 7 Update to my desktop I then forgot to shutdown IE and went ahead and removed Java I then did not reboot but went straight into the install of the new version Java I then did a reboot Back to front and inside I know.........will it be OK? slab288 PS the only Java which shows up in the Add/Remove Programe is the Java 7 Update 13 (64bit). Starbuck Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Hi slab288, Back to front and inside I know.........will it be OK? Good question..... it may be ok. Some of the realtime updates are done with the browser running. We normally say to close the browser so that there's no chance of a conflict anywhere. If you get any problems and it says that Java needs to be installed..... you'll know the reason. But for now, take it that it's ok. Quote Member of:UNITE
slab288 Posted February 3, 2013 Author Posted February 3, 2013 (edited) Thanks for the quick reply Satrbuck. Would it be OK to just do an uninstall then re-install again or does it not work that way? slab288 Edited February 3, 2013 by slab288 Quote
Starbuck Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Would it be OK to just do an uninstall then re-install again or does it not work that way? Yes, you could download it again.... then uninstall your present version and install the new one again (properly). That would work fine. or... if you still have the download on your desktop, just use that and not bother to download it again. slab288 Posted February 3, 2013 Author Posted February 3, 2013 i tried that but I think it's gone......as we round here.......squ whiff, I uninstalled then went to the desktop to reinstall but there's nothiong there well just some gobble de gook. I'll try downloading it again straight onto the computer i.e. not saving it to the desktop see what happens. slab288 Quote
Starbuck Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 ok. Just follow my instructions from the start again and all will be fine. Quote Member of:UNITE

slab288 Posted February 4, 2013 Author Posted February 4, 2013 Yes Starbuck I'm using it, I have it printed out so that I get it right. Everytime I do it Java 7 Update 13 (64-bit) appears in the add/remove list so it is there but when I go onto Java.com and click "Do I Have Java" it says unable to confirm. When I did this earlier in the thread it came up as being seen.........Hope all that makes sense. slab288 Quote

Starbuck Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 I appreciate your taking the time to help after I caused the initial problem. It's no problem at all. As long as you get there in the end.... that's all that matters. Safe surfing. http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/033/b/3/Computer_addict__by_Sinister_Starfeesh.gif Quote Member of:UNITE
