Hi Guys,

Switched my laptop on a few hours ago to find my wireless connection wasn't working. Haven't installed anything new, only use the laptop for maintaining my wordpress sites.

The wireless tray icon has a little red cross next to it, and when hovered over says "Not Connected - No connections are available"

...Which obviously there are, and even if there was a fault with my router (which there isn't as everything else connects perfectly) there are usually around 15 other local neighbour connections picked up.

System Details below - let me know if you need anything else:

Sony Vaio - VGN-Z21WN

Windows 7 Professional - Service Pack 1

Processor - Intel® Core2 Duo CPU P9500 @ 2.53GHz 2.53 GHz

Installed memory (RAM) - 4.00 GB

System type - 64-bit Operating System

Click the + next to Network Adapters

2. Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs against any of the devices listed ?

3. Silly question .....you do have the Wireless option switched on ?

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Hi jaykay1984, could it be something as simple as you hit the a physical button on the laptop to enable / disable Wifi. Not sure about the Sony Vaio but I see it all the time at work where we use HP EliteBooks.

Hi Ken - Thanks for getting back to me.

There aren't any yellow exclamation marks or anything - or even anything that looks like a wireless card... Definitely has wireless though, and the wireless button is definitely switched on.

Thanks Walker - This is what I'd originally hoped had happened! :p

Sadly not though...

Re-installed these drivers, but still nada.

No confirmation or anything after the drivers installed by the way.

Think it's possible that the wireless card has actually stopped working by itself?

Hi

download Speccy from here

You want the free version.

Make sure you don't elect to install the Google Toolbar - unless you want it :)

Click on "Network" and scroll down to Adapters List

Copy what is there and paste it here please.

It should show both the Wireless and the Ethernet adapters.

Hi Guys - thanks for your replies on this.

Right...

After becoming more and more frustrated with the laptop and not being able to figure out why the wifi connection wasn't working, i just didn't use the laptop for a good couple of weeks.

Now to my surprise, I turned it on this evening, and the wifi is working great... what on earth is going on? Obviously it's good that it's back, but i really would like to prevent this from happening again if possible.

Screenshot below of my device manager, in particular the wireless card. You'll notice there is now an additional entry from the previous screenshot i provided earlier on in this thread.

I have not changed anything, it just seems to have come back by itself...

Unless I am being particularly dumb ( no comments Mods !! :) ) I don't see it.

The fact that your wireless connection is now working will, no doubt, remain a mystery.

It could be a problem with the adapter itself or it could be a problem with the router.

I have had this sort of thing before and the router was failing.

The connection would drop - and for no reason connect again by itself.

It could be a problem with the Winsock. ( software )

I am not suggesting that this is the cause of your problem.

Just that wireless networks are complex and there could be a number of reasons that cause the same problem.

Let's hope that things stay as they are.

If not - you know where to post :)

Thanks Ken - I thought that would pretty much be the case, that it would be a bit of a mystery.

The new screenshot I posted shows the wifi connections in the device manager, the previous screenshot showed they had dissapeared.

Will keep you posted on how everything goes! :)

Cheers

Hi, being more a hardware than software man, my take is that considering the Intel ® Wifi link 5100 AGN having now returned to showing as connected according to your device manager, yet previously wasn't there at all.

That is to the point of not being seen enough to even give a usual red or yellow warning, and I assume would not have been found if a search had been done, suggests a poor connection, perhaps on the motherboard or if the WIFI unit is a separate card, the socket it is plugged into.

The fact the laptop was not used, and maybe lid folded down and moved somewhere out of the way, could have been just enough to jolt a connection back into being good enough for it to work.

Let us know if it happens again, and if possible a check of any connections can be done then. There is a possibility of there being a removable panel on the underside of the laptop to gain access to the WIFI unit if it is a separate plug in thing.

Plus of course, next time, we know it is the Intel wifi link we will be looking for, and if it is connected, the Speccy program Ken linked to will find it. If no sign of it in Speccy, it is more than likely totally disconnected.

Nev.

I said I was being dumb - I was comparing the link with the image in the post :)

Keep us posted as you say - hopefully all will be OK now.
