Ray1000 Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 I recently re-formatted my desktop and have failed so to get Google Earth back on. My ancient Video card is an Nvidia MX440. I have DirectX 9c installed. I have tried the latest version of GE which seemed to say DirectX wasn’t installed, and then tried two of the earlier versions ... 6 and 5. All of them affected the colour on the screen to some extent while trying and failing to start. I had a version working before the re-format, albeit, if I remember rightly with a white globe as it started, and of course I have never seen any 3D effects on the desktop. Thank you for any ideas. If yellow exclamation mark - drivers are here: click here If downloading make sure you get the drivers and not other rubbish :) ( Drivers should be the left d/l green button ) Is that card AGP ? Minimum system requirements - Google Earth Operating System: Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 CPU: Pentium 3, 500Mhz System Memory (RAM): 512MB Hard Disk: 500MB free space Network Speed: 128 Kbits/sec Graphics Card: DirectX9 and 3D capable with 64MB of VRAM Screen: 1024x768, "16-bit High Color" - DirectX 9 (to run in Direct X mode) Mail: Outlook 2007+ is required for email functionality From the Video Card specs .... effectively multiply the memory bandwidth to ensure fluid frame rates for the latest 3D and 2D games and applications. The card is 3D capable. I had checked previously for updates but it said there ere none available. It passes all the DirectX tests for 3D etc. I'm just going to double check the display settings. Ray Quote

The desktop is wired. Two separate hard drives C: 40GB 16 used 22 free D: 80GB 16 used 58 free In round figures I tried the latest version twice. A Version 6 once A Version 5 once Was going to try a Version 4 but I didn't think it would prove anything and read there would be some problems with it using Directx 9c And each time un-installed then went into search files and deleted all the Google Earth leftovers, carefully checking the installation date first. Strongly recommend DirectX Please complete login window first if it’s shown in front. Upon investigation, we find that your particular graphics card does not support GE in “OpenGL” mode. You are likely to encounter severe problems with GE if you proceed. We would like to switch you to Directx mode I clicked yes New box ... Please start GE again for DirectX mode Graphics restore to normal at this point (the moment I click to start GE the colours on the front screen are distorted and discolourd) New box ... Ray1000 Posted February 12, 2013 Author Posted February 12, 2013 Neither of them work Ken, I had tried each version, each time in GL and DirectX. If you look at the red lettering in the second picture you can see how being in either mode effects the colour on the screen. Similarly with the blue box next to the red lettering randomly changes to green when GE tries to start. Ray Quote

Ray1000 Posted February 12, 2013 Author Posted February 12, 2013 There are two video connections on the motherboard, both female, and my cable from the monitor happens to be female plugging into the male socket on the video card. The way it's installed in my desk it would be a major job to test the MB connections. I'll see if I can scrounge an adapter before stripping the built-in furniture down. Would it would fail the 3D tests if there as anything wrong with the video card I wonder? Ray Quote

Ray1000 Posted February 13, 2013 Author Posted February 13, 2013 Yes it's only Google Earth. Having said that there are no similar programs running, no games etc to check the video performance. (other than the DirectX tests) The machine starts up and stops in a timely fashion and runs as quick as anything I've been on. The screen picture is perfect apart from when trying to start Google Earth at which point the greens and blue merge even in the bottom tool bar. In msconfig > statup there are only two entries ... Avast and NvCpl which I assume is something for NVidia. I wonder if running the XP Pro disc on repair might be worthwhile? I wonder if it has something to do with the order in which I did the re-format. If I remember correctly .... Formatted HD > re-installed windows > installed all drivers > installed newer drivers for MB > Windows update > Downloaded and installed SP3 > more windows updates applied > Re-registered windows. Try this for me: Start > C: > Program Files(x86) > Google > Google Earth > Client [ the path may be slightly different I am on Win 8 ] Scroll Down ........ Googleearth ( blue icon ) ..............click on this. Does GE launch and is the problem still the same ? I inadvertently bookmarked page one of this thread and didn't notice we had moved on to page 2 ... Sorry about that. This is ODD !! Try this: Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Delete Delete cookies and temp Internet Files. Any sites that Windows stores login data for you will need to be accessed with the login and password again. I am thinking ( hoping :) ) it may be a corrupt cookie. ============= Have you tried updating the video drivers ?
