Ray1000 Posted February 16, 2013 Author Posted February 16, 2013 ODD indeed! Unfortunately it makes no difference with all the data cleared ... the resulting screen picture was the same as before, with the same boxes popping up and GE not starting. There are no updates for the video. I haven’t had chance yet to test the on board graphics. I wonder if there is any value in putting the XP disc in and running repair? Ray Quote
KenB Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 I wonder if there is any value in putting the XP disc in and running repair? This would be a last resort. We need to know if you get the same problem from the on-board video. If you don't then it is your card that is the cause. Ray1000 Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 Ken, Now I have had a closer look at the Motherboard I realise there are no on-board graphics ... the sockets I had been looking at are of a different type which accounts for my confusion with the male and female. I downloaded GE from the same site on my next door nieghbours machine this morning ... it worked perfectly as expected. On this page ... http://9to5google.com/2012/06/06/google-demos-enhanced-3d-maps-using-aerial-imagery/ ... my computer displays the images perfectly ... making me think the graphics card might still be working properly. Just going to re-install the graphics driver again ... Ray Quote
Ray1000 Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 Re-installing the graphics driver made no difference ... still get the change in colours on the screen and the DirectX notice coming up.:( Ray Quote
KenB Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Hi Ray This has got to be a setting then. Did you try the "Open GL" mode offered from the pop-up saying "DirectX not supported" ? Found a thread that suggested a third party 3D viewer ( viewsonic in this case ) had the driver conflicting. Un-installed - all OK Do you have anything similar on your system ? Ray1000 Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 I shall have a look at the settings Ken, The Open GL mode gives the identical response ... doesn't start ... screen colour changes ...suggests using DirectX. Ray Quote
Ray1000 Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 Thanks Ken, There are no results for "viewsonic" in search on C: but when I search "3D" the first thing on a long list is "D3D compiler" ... a quick Google search mentions DirectX problems! ...that's as far as I've got before posting this ...will do some reading ... I'm using Firefox BTW. Ray Quote

Ray1000 Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 Are these same results in in other peoples search for "D3D Compiler" ??? Thank you Ray Quote
Ray1000 Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 Just removed Firefox thinking the D3D Compiler may be causing a problem and be an integral part of Firefox but it is still in the search results Quote
KenB Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Hi Ray It is late and I am going to bed ....... Download Revo Uninstalled and see what that comes up with re. installed programs click here scroll down for the free version. Ray1000 Posted February 19, 2013 Author Posted February 19, 2013 Thank you Ken, I have downloaded the program but not sure how to benefit from it ... Ray Quote
KenB Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Hi Ray If you run it - it will list all installed software. Does it list anything that looks like it may contain a 3D Viewer that could possibly be conflicting ? D3D Compiler is part of DirectX Try this: Open G-E File > Server Sign Out Then click on Tools > Options > Cache Click on "Delete Cache File" Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Ray1000 Posted February 21, 2013 Author Posted February 21, 2013 Ken, There is nothing on the list I don't recognise and nothing relating to 3D Unfortunately Google Earth won't open to the point where you could access "File > Server Sign Out" Ray Quote
KenB Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Hi Ray I am fairly sure that this is all related to your Video Card. The only way we will really know is to swap it for another - or put your card in another system. Without going back through the thread - I think your card is AGP ( the type of slot it sits in ) and newer motherboards may not have this type of slot. Is this a possibility ? Ray1000 Posted February 22, 2013 Author Posted February 22, 2013 The card could be AGP Ken but I don't know how to tell, or if the newer version looks sufficiently different to be obvious. I did notice on my next door nieghbours Sony desktop the monitor plug is different to mine ... his is wider with a distinct extra bigger pin off to one side, there might have also been more of the std pins. Ray Quote
KenB Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Hi Ray - I have looked back and I said earlier it was AGP. (older technology prior to PCIe ) They are usually brown. http://img.tfd.com/cde/MBOARD.GIF Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Ray1000 Posted February 22, 2013 Author Posted February 22, 2013 Yes Ken the video card is plugged into the brown AGP socket. Just as a reminder Google Earth did work before the re-format albeit not the latest version 7 ... I was probably using a version 6 ... even version 5 won't start up now. Ray Quote
KenB Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Thanks for that reminder Ray - it SHOULD work then. I have just read back through the thread ..... I did suggest updating the Video Card Drivers earlier but the link was to an early version ...... there should be a more recent driver. Let's give this a go. Start > type in ..... devmgmt.msc ...... Hit ENTER Click the > next to Display Adapters > right click on the Device ( should be MX 440 ) > Update Drivers When prompted select Automatic You will need an internet connection. Ray1000 Posted February 22, 2013 Author Posted February 22, 2013 No, it says there is no better match than the software currently installed. Ray Quote
KenB Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 What version is the driver ? In device manager right click on the MX440 > Properties > Driver There may be a more recent version that is not found by the auto-search. Ray1000 Posted February 23, 2013 Author Posted February 23, 2013 Thank you for sticking with me Ken, The driver is 6.14.10.9371 Driver Date 22/10/2006 Ray Quote
Ray1000 Posted February 23, 2013 Author Posted February 23, 2013 I wonder if this is one ... http://nvidia-geforce4-mx-440.soft32.com/ Quote
Ray1000 Posted February 23, 2013 Author Posted February 23, 2013 Probably not as I've downloaded and run it, re-started the machine and it still shows the same 2006 driver details Quote
Ray1000 Posted February 23, 2013 Author Posted February 23, 2013 Looks like it is the same one referred to as 93.71 Quote
