Hi,

I hope someone can help with a peculiar problem I've been experiencing. Please accept my apologies if this is long winded, but I've tried to include everything I've done so far to try and resolve this issue.

I'm unable to access a website that I have been visiting regularly for nearly a year without any previous problems. However, for the last 5 days I have repeatedly received the following message "oops! Google Chrome could not connect to activeshooter.co.uk” on every occasion I have tried to do so. I initially assumed the site was down for one reason or another. However, I continued to receive e-mail updates to threads that I am subscribed to on that site. I thought that it was a little odd, as I have never experienced any problems with this site in the past.

Thinking it was a problem specific to my Windows 7, Google Chrome laptop, I tried my wife’s laptop. I got the same result with her laptop, which runs Windows 7 with Internet Explorer. Next I dug out an old laptop running Windows XP and Mozilla Firefox. All three worked perfectly, except all three could not open activeshooter.co.uk. All three laptops connect wirelessly to Virgin Media broadband via a Netgear router. Incidentally, neither of our android phones will connect to activeshooter.co.uk via wi-fi either.

I contacted my daughter, also a Virgin Media customer, and asked if she could access the website, which she was able to do immediately using my granddaughters Ipad. However, that same Ipad was unable to openactiveshooter.co.uk when tried using my wi-fi last night.

Ok. This is a router problem I thought, so switched the router off for several minutes and then re-booted it, only to have the same problem. I contacted Virgin Media and explained that I was unable to connect to this particular site. They asked me to restart both the router and my pc and to connect my laptop to the router with an Ethernet cable, which I did. They then talked me through a series of trouble shooting resolutions, which all failed to resolve this one issue. They told me there was nothing they could do for me as everything “is” working normally.

I have tried opening the site from my bookmarks, typing the address directly into different web browsers and using the links contained in e-mails from activeshooter.co.uk, all to no avail. I have also tried turning off both the firewall and anti-virus, also to no effect.

I've know run out of ideas and almost patience too and I'm hoping someone here may be able to help or has some suggestions that I've not tried yet.

Is this the site?

http://activeshooter.co.uk/content/

It does work for me so the site is up.

I'm not with Virgin though.

Can't open a web site

Thank you for your reply. I have supplied the information you requested, but to be honest I'm only guessing that the session timed out early as you suggested it may if the router was the problem.

Hi

There are a number reasons why trace route will not complete.

The last IP Address ( 212.111.33.234) belongs to Telecitygroup International Limited as does the one before it ( 217.20.44.193 )

The trace has got beyond Virgin so I doubt that it is a router problem.

All of the hops are in and around London.

It could be that the next hop has blocked trace route requests.

What happens if you try to ping www.activeshooter.co.uk

You should get 4 packets sent and received - no losses.

Then try to ping 178.79.160.68

This is the IP Address of activeshooter

Again - you should get 4 packets sent and received.

Get to the command prompt as described earlier.

Thank you for your reply Ken.

My router is a Netgear VMDG280 and I'm sorry I do not know if it is classed as a Suoer Hub or not.

I sent the ping from the diagnostics centre of my router's settings page as I remembered how to access it. I hope this is still a valid the test, as I could not recall the method once in command prompt. I blame it on my age, well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. The results were as follows and are copied exactely as they appeared:

Pinging 178.79.160.68 with 64 bytes of data:[Complete]

Reply from 178.79.160.68: bytes = 64, time = 27 ms

Reply from 178.79.160.68: bytes = 64, time = 27 ms

Reply from 178.79.160.68: bytes = 64, time = 27 ms

Reply from 178.79.160.68: bytes = 64, time = 27 ms

4/4 replies received.

min time=20 ms, max time=50 ms, avg time=27

ms

Whilst I'm extremely frustrated at not being able to access this one site, I'm intrigued at what I'm learning with the tasks you are asking me to perform. I just hope that I will remember for future reference the lessons you are teaching me.

Thank you for your help.

The modem you have is known simply as a "hub", which is one step older than the superhub.

I'd like to try turn off the firewall on the router anyway - its worth a shot, even if it won't probably fix the issue.

Go to your web browser and go to http://192.168.0.1

You should be asked for a username password, which will be "admin" and "changeme" respectively by default.

There will be a list of links on the left. From the top of my head I'm not 100% sure which option it is on your router, but it will be something obvious like "security" or even "firewall".

We want to disable the firewall completely and try the website again,

Good luck,

Forgive the vagueness of the last post.

Once in the routers control panel and you have entered the username and password,

Click Services, on the left.

When the next page loads, uncheck the box next to "firewall features".

Click apply.

Hi,

Following my pinging of activeshooter.co.uk yesterday I went on to open my emails. I had an update to a thread I was subscribed to on activeshooter.co.uk. I clicked the reply link and low and behold it took me straight to the site. I was able to log in and reply to all my threads. I have been able to log in and out without problem since.

Is it possible that the action of pinging the website has resolved this issue? I would like to thank you for your assistance in resolving this issue. I enjoyed "medalling" where I don't usually "medal", for fear of permanently damaging my pc.

Good to hear that the problem is now solved.

I wouldn't think so.

Pinging the site is our way of seeing if your system can actually communicate with the site servers.
