Hi,

Can anyone advise what's happening.

My wifes 5 year old Sony Vaio running Vista has developed a screen fault.

It started showing different colours - then seemed to right itself - left it for a short time then when she came back distorted colours had reappeared.

Now (everytime it's started up) it has a screen which has vertical lines right across it rather like series ranks of coloured blocked dots and dashes all the way across the screen.

Behind these marks (vaguely) can be seen the desktop and other screens as you open them but in a rather misty fashion.

Advice gratefully accepted.

David.

Hello Hafoi Bin Ereafower

Sounds like bad news its either the LCD Panel or Graphics Card ( Both expensive to replace)

If you really want to find out, You maybe able to connect a monitor to the machine and see if the distortions appear on that

If it does Graphics Card

If not its sounds more to be the LCD Panel.

May advice would be its time for a new machine :/

Hi, if an external monitor as suggested by Seedy (If you have or can borrow one) works OK, just one thing to try is moving the lid on its hinges while the computer is on, does that alter anything? Say for example a change in the pattern of lines, or even a return to the correct screen, as sometimes the cable connecting the monitor panel to the computer can break, or even just pull out of the socket it plugs into.

That is a reasonably easy fix, price wise.

Hi,

Thanks for the responses, will suggest moving the lid.

The only other screens we've got are flat screen tv's - one a small Sony about seven years old the other a newer Kogan - - and - a flat screen from an old Evesham desk type computer - would any of them do ?

That question is not silly . We prefer that you ask us if you dont know what it means :).

Keep us updated when you get time to test it with your laptop

The test suggested it was the graphics card and a subsquent visit to our local (recommended) technician confirmed it.

Repair looks uneconomic so new replacement looks the only way to go.

Thanks to Seedy21 and Nev for your help.

A shame is that, a perfectly good laptop dead due to expense of sorting the graphics.

However, one thing worth doing before disposing of the laptop is to remove the hard drive, may be a small cover underneath to remove first, or if unlucky a full dismantle.

Once removed, that protects any personal details as you still have the drive.

Secondly you can then obtain and not too expensively, a USB enclosure for the drive and use it as an external hard drive.

Also be able to transfer anything important from the drive onto another computer or the replacement laptop.

Yes a great shame the Sony was a lovely laptop to use but will suggest removing the hard drive to get some value from it's demise.

Can still get onto internet and do letters etc borrowing my trusty old Acer and now thinking of alternatives.

Will open another thread as the questions on replacement are different - - thanks again for your help.
