hi, can anyone help? - i have a Zxyel router, had for about 5years,and a windows dell latop. The router daily, intermittently loses its connection to the internet and when I look at the network sharing centre it shows the PC connected to the router, but the connection between the router and the internet is not there. To solve the problem i am able to turn the router off and on, and it connects back up ok, only to drop out say 1hr later or sometime later. This happens daily, and has been going on for about at least a month.

Any ideas what i can do to stop it happening?

thanks

Hi and wecome to ExTS :)

I have had this problem before. Router dropping the connection for no apparent reason. Switch it off - re-boot. Connection re-established only to drop out again.

The solution was to replace the router.

At 5 years old I suspect that you may well have to do the same thing.

( they don't last forever )

I did fix my sister's by changing the channel from within the router's software.

What you describe could be down to radio interference.

Try changing the channel to either 1 / 6 / 11

(there is a reason for these specific channels ....... just select one that is furthest away from the channel you are currently set to )

If you need advice on how to do this just post back with the model number of your Zxyel router.

Hi

I am just on my way out.

The manual for your router is here

I had a quick look and there seems to be no reference to selecting the channel.

It is usually under Wireless LAN setup.

I did find one reference that suggests that the channel is set to 6 by default so we would want to change that to 11 or 1.

I will pick this up later.

Hi

I have looked through the manual again - it is not obvious where the location is to change the channel ( unless I am missing something ! )

To access the software settings do the following:

Open Internet Explorer and where http\\www. etc etc is ....delete everything in this box and type 192.168.1.1 and then hit ENTER

You will be faced with the Login screen.

The password default is 1234.

There is no need to change this - unless you want to.

Once in - look for Wireless and search around these settings.

If Advanced is there - try looking here.

You are looking to change the channel setting only.

Let me know how you get on ( the manual is not the easiest to find information )

i have tried to access the router using 1234 and it doesnt let me get in.

Can you therefore suggest routers that i could get to replace this one?

I've got a TP Link similar to this one

The wireless signal is good and I get no drop-outs.

The reviews for this one look good.

Give them a read before you decide.

This is a mid-range router comparing prices.

There is no absolute guarantee that this will solve the problem - but a regular dropped connection is usually down to the router and not the computer.
