Hello everyone

This is my situation: I got this Acer Aspire 5920 with a nVidia GeForce 8600M GS that is of course burned. I tried the oven trick and now it works but I'm sure that it's going to be soon broken again. So I decided to substitute my current nVidia with an ATI HD 3650 - which is compatible as far as I know - but I've red somewhere that a BIOS problem could happen.

If I didn't misunderstand, my BIOS should be able to recognize my new ATI and in order to do that I should "update" it to the new ATI features. How can I fix that?

My BIOS version is: 1.3813

My VGA BIOS Version is: nVidia 60.86.54.00.27

How do I switch this into an ATI 3650 compatible BIOS version?

Thank you in advance for your answers and please forgive my terrible English, I'm Italian.

Regards,

Enzo.

Hi Enzo,

Considering that we always regard doing any sort of upgrade to the BIOS as a last resort, even though they say it is safer these days, if it goes wrong, you don't have a computer any more, just a pretty door stop.

So first try the new ATI card and see how it goes, if it works OK then leave the BIOS alone.

I actually don't think that will be an issue, reading the spec for the ATI card and also your computer, I see no reason at all as to why it shouldn't work.

Once the card is fitted, and when you then boot up again, the BIOS will configure itself to the new card, if the card comes with a drivers disk, follow instructions for installing the drivers and all should be OK.
