Guitarman Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 When I first got windows 8 I loved the metro apps and tiles screen but all of a sudden they don't open. It's so frustrating as you can see the tile move as if you've clicked it but nothing happens. The store doesn't work either, you click it and the green screen comes up and then closes immediately... I have tried the app trouble shooter and it found errors but it didn't change anything... Even default apps dont work such as: weather, news, travel and well all of them apart from programs I've installed myself... Please help its really annoying me :( P.S. I do not have avast and never have Quote
Guitarman Posted April 21, 2013 Author Posted April 21, 2013 Please help guys or just tell me if your having the same problem.. Because its so annoying not being able to use the new windows 8 features Quote
KenB Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 Hi The only thing I can suggest is that you run system restore and revert the system settings to a date just prior to the start of your problem. Point the mouse curser to the top right corner and click on the search option. Type in ......system restore ......then click on settings Click the system restore button and follow the prompts. Your data / files / photos etc will be fine. Guitarman Posted April 28, 2013 Author Posted April 28, 2013 Hi again Ken thanks for your reply :) so if i do a system restore my files should remain untouched even the ones I have edited lately? I only worry because I have all my songs I'm working on on here Quote
Plastic Nev Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 Hi, all files and data will remain intact, including all recent work, however any programs installed after the date you restore back to, will be gone. So do take note of that and have the program install disks, or if downloaded, the downloaded program data to hand. If programs have been added since that restore date, reinstall them one at a time and make sure all is OK with the computer after each one, just in case it is one of them that caused your problem. If there is any concern at all regarding recent work done, just to be sure, do back it up by burning it to a disk, or copying to an external hard drive or flash drive. Nev. Guitarman Posted May 5, 2013 Author Posted May 5, 2013 Hi thanks Nev I did try but it encountered an error so changed nothing and in doing that it messed up my screen resolutions and file locations :( I think its safe to say my pc is screwed... But at least pro tools still works fine and all my desktop items.. its just a bit annoying i cant access the new features until microsoft do something about it... sadly i cant even re install windows as my PC didn't come with the install disk :( Quote
KenB Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 Hi try the following: Hold Windows key + C .....> Settings ( right side ) ....> Change PC Settings (this is at the bottom) Click on General ....> Under Refresh your PC without affecting your files, click Get started Follow the screen prompts. Guitarman Posted June 24, 2013 Author Posted June 24, 2013 Hi again sorry haven't checked on here in a while I tried what you suggested KenB and it began to do the refresh but booted back up quick and gave me an error.. Is there anything else I can do without the install discs? Quote
KenB Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 ..............and gave me an error. What did the error say ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Â MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
Guitarman Posted June 30, 2013 Author Posted June 30, 2013 There is no error code or anything like that it literally says: There was a problem while refreshing your PC No changes were made. There is the option to troubleshoot this but it starts and then closes itself after a few seconds of loading... Quote
KenB Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Hi You have an problem with System Restore and also Refresh your PC. The Metro Apps don't work either. I don't suppose that you have an image of your hard drive do you ? Guitarman Posted July 1, 2013 Author Posted July 1, 2013 Yes I do.. I haven't tried going back to factory settings as I don't want to have to transfer all my stuff and I dont have a external hard drive to save it all to.. I can open it up and find out if that would help? or is there a way to just find out? Quote
KenB Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 I can open it up and find out if that would help? or is there a way to just find out? I'm sorry - you have lost me here. I am not sure what you are asking. Where do you have the image saved ? I can understand that you do not wish to go back to the original settings but unless somebody else has any ideas it may be your only option. Guitarman Posted July 1, 2013 Author Posted July 1, 2013 Sorry that wasn't well explained I'll try again.. I dont know what hard drive I have, is there a way I can find out without having to open my pc up and look at it? I dont think it is a problem with my hard drive though as it has always worked fine... I believe from all I've read online that the only way to get it working would be to refresh it but something is really messed up with my copy of windows meaning that's not an option for me.. I think I'm just going to have to live with it... However I am building myself a gaming PC so I'll be saying good bye to this PC soon... I may keep it just for homework purposes only but for anything else I'll be on my new build.. I've built it on this PC building site could you check it out and tell me what you think: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/1cbyu I have done a lot of research into it so hopefully everything is correct... Thank you for all your help, you were the only one brave enough to try to help me with the whole metro apps problem so thank you :) Quote
KenB Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 I dont know what hard drive I have, is there a way I can find out without having to open my pc up and look at it? This problem is not related to your hard drive. I can explain how to do this if you wish. Still with your Win8 problem: When I first got windows 8 Is this version of Win8 the one you had on your machine when you bought it ? How old is the machine? Guitarman Posted July 4, 2013 Author Posted July 4, 2013 Don't worry I know how to find my hard drive and everything its just you mentioned it in a previous post... Yes it is it came with it installed and I got the machine about a year ago I think maybe longer.. A little while after Windows 8 came out Quote
Plastic Nev Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 Just as a quick pop in here, I know we don't actually need the hard drive information as yet.  However you asked if it is possible to find it without actually taking it out, yes there is a way, it is a small free utility program called Speccy. We always recommend it for this purpose. If you want to try it out, download it and install from here:-  http://www.piriform.com/speccy It will show you the full details of the hard drive and also the operating system, motherboard, RAM, and other useful system hardware information, such as temperatures of CPU, GPU, and main motherboard temperatures as well. Nev. KenB Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 I thought I had posted this last night ??? Must be old age !! I think it is a case of reverting to the image that you have of the drive. Is this stored on a different drive than the problem one? Don't forget to backup and data / photos etc first. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!  MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
Guitarman Posted July 6, 2013 Author Posted July 6, 2013 Cheers Nev will get that now and sorry for confusing you Ken I don't have a picture of it I didn't say I did.. Do you want me to just paste in here what speccy gives me? Quote
Guitarman Posted July 6, 2013 Author Posted July 6, 2013 Just realized would you mean by image a backup as I do have a drive named recovery? Quote
Guitarman Posted July 6, 2013 Author Posted July 6, 2013 Also guys just to say I'm not so sure its a faulty hard drive as it has been totally fine for everything else... I believe I may just be missing some files from my windows directory or something which is disabling metro apps... And why the store wont work? I don't really know enough to assume this is true thou Quote

Plastic Nev Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 Hi again, that recovery drive may be what we need, is that a part of your hard drive, or is it on a separate external hard drive which is not a part of your computer? If it is a part of the computers drive, Ken will explain what you can do next, I am only asking so you can have time to give us that information till Ken gets back to you. Nev. Guitarman Posted August 1, 2013 Author Posted August 1, 2013 Hey Nev sorry for not replying been on holiday and busy with school before hand.. I have looked into it and found that its a separate partition which comes up as my D drive in computer... should I look for HP restore or something? The thing is thou I really don't want to start again now but when I get my new computer which Ken is already helping me with I'll be transferring stuff onto it and then can reset this one as I plan to use them both... So do I need to wait till then and restore to factory settings when I get my new one and have transferred my data or is there something else I can do now? Quote
Plastic Nev Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 In actual fact, for safety of your data so as to not risk losing it in any form of system restore from the partition, it may well be best to get the new machine up and running, transfer all your data, then do a full return to factory settings then. Providing all data is saved to the new computer, you can safely do whatever you want with this one. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here.
