Fed Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 There seems to be no obvious trigger to whats causing it to crash. I turn it on and normally once i reach my desktop the screen will have froze. Sometimes i manage to get to open a programme like itunes or chrome and then it freezes up. I've had a variety of types of crash as well - blue screen, frozen screen, freezes which have bleeps with them, others where the screen has gone blank, freezes where i can't even hold down the power button to cold boot it and have had to simply yank the plug out. I manged to run a full windows security essentials scan on it and it didn't find anything wrong. I've been able to run on ''safe mode with networking'', however this is still occasionally crashing as well. I'm not really sure where to even start, hopefully someone can give me some pointers? Thanks Quote
KenB Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Hi Have you installed any new hardware recently ? Have you installed any software too ? Boot up in Safe Mode with Networking. Download Speccy from here: click here. Install and run it. Post the reported temperatures after running for a while. Start > type in .....devmgmt.msc ...... ENTER click the + next to each device. Are there any yellow exclamation marks ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
Fed Posted April 4, 2013 Author Posted April 4, 2013 Hi, Thanks for the response, really appreciate it! I ran the speccy but it stopped running and shut itself down after a couple of minutes with this error message ''CPU dll init failed (error 2)! Some information will not be displayed!'' It now does the same thing every time after i open it. I did the other thing and had no yellow exclamation marks. Is there anything else you know i can try? Thanks Quote
KenB Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Hi There is a thread on the Piriform site relating to this problem click here First time I have come across it. Try downloading revo uninstaller from here click here Scroll down a bit for the free version. Install it and run. It will list installed software - use this to uninstall Speccy Use the default setting and uninstall all related files etc Try re-installing Speccy again. I would like to know what the temperatures are. If this fails we can probably find a similar piece of software. Fed Posted April 4, 2013 Author Posted April 4, 2013 Still no joy i'm afraid. Getting the same error message. Do you know of any similar pieces of software I can download? Quote
Fed Posted April 4, 2013 Author Posted April 4, 2013 If i ignore the error message i can still use the Speccy software. Where do i get the temperatures that things are running at? We might be in business... Quote
KenB Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Where do i get the temperatures that things are running at? This is usually listed under the General tab. Fed Posted April 4, 2013 Author Posted April 4, 2013 Not sure if i'm being a bit simple but I can't see a general tab? Quote
Fed Posted April 4, 2013 Author Posted April 4, 2013 Also, for a long time now I've only been able to get data come up about Optical Drives, Audio, Peripherals & Network. It might just be taking a while but i suspect I might have jumped the gun in saying we might be in business Quote
KenB Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 I can't see a general tab? My error - the temps show up on the initial screen - you don't have to click anything. Try Everest from here if Speccy is still a problem. click here Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Fed Posted April 4, 2013 Author Posted April 4, 2013 I've managed to install Everest and it seems to be running okay. What data do i need to pick out for you? Quote
Plastic Nev Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 For when KenB gets back, I think the most important ones he will need to see are all temperatures, CPU, Graphics, Motherboard, and if shown hard drive and power supply temperatures. Also if shown, the CPU information such as type or make and model, plus how many cores and if more than one, how many of them are running. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Fed Posted April 9, 2013 Author Posted April 9, 2013 Sorry it's taken me so long to respond to this, I've ended up being anywhere but home to be able to deal with this. I couldn't see how to find out the temperatures of any of the above...it doesn't seem entirely obvious (to me anyway!) how to get that info. Earlier on after my computer crashed (Blue Screen) before id logged in it gave me this error report once i'd restarted in safe mode - not sure if it is of any use to anyone? Fed Posted April 10, 2013 Author Posted April 10, 2013 I haven't yet successfully been able to turn my computer on today. It crashed before I even got to sign in earlier - the screen just turned off and the computer just made bleeps at me until i cold booted it. Since then if I turn it on the fan just runs really loudly without anything at all happening so I just have to cold boot it again. This happened last week, hopefully in a few hours i'll be able to get it running again. Quote
Fed Posted April 10, 2013 Author Posted April 10, 2013 She's fired up now but i can't even find these files, let alone access them... C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-70621-0.sysdata.xml C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Local\Temp\WERAB6B.tmp.versi on.txt I restarted and I had another similar report come up and the contents of it does vary slightly, want me to post that as well? KenB Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 computer just made bleeps at me Next time it does this make a note of the beep pattern and let me know what it is ( 1 long ... 2 short ) want me to post that as well? If you can find the text file that it refers to I would be interested in seeing that. You didn't give us any information re. this.... Start > type in .....devmgmt.msc ...... Fed Posted April 10, 2013 Author Posted April 10, 2013 I can't get any further then C:\Users\Nick\ there isn't an ''AppData'' Folder. As for the bleep... It is just a short beep evenly spaced apart that continues until i cold boot. I've tried several programmes that read the temperature the pc is running at but none of the seem to be able to run properly, i can only assume this is something to do with my problems issue. I've tried Speccy, Speedfan, CPUid & Everest. I've attached what little data was offered from CPUid. As for the yellow exclamation marks, there were none. I'm afraid you've lost me on ''RA modules'' Also i'm only running one piece of security software Thanks Quote
Plastic Nev Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Hi Fed, I think Ken meant RAM, the memory sticks plugged into the motherboard. If you have only two, do as he suggested, if more than two, remove one and test, if no change put that one back then remove another till all have been tried. Nev. RandyL Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 C:\Users\Nick\ there isn't an ''AppData'' Folder AppData is a hidden folder. You can unhide hidden files and folders to see it. An easier way is to just type in or paste C:\Users\Nick\AppData in the address bar of a browser or folder. This will show the folder even if it's hidden. Fed Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 Evening all, So, I've opened her up and taking out what i presume is one of the RAM's, well in fact i've taken out a pair, there seems to be two sets of two, does that sound right? The good news is that although the pc is running slower, i am now writing this without being in safe mode and the pc hasn't crashed in the entire it's been running (15 minutes). Should I check the other RAM? Does having 4 sound right? Or are they in pairs? I managed to finally access the C:\Users\Nick\AppData folder but the files weren't in there... Thanks for your help yet again. Quote
Fed Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 I've swapped the pair taken in/out now and the computer is running at normal speed, if not a little quicker than i remember? That said it's been a couple of weeks since it ran properly so maybe my memory is hazey! Would this suggest it's the combination of both sets of ram working together causing an issue? Having left it running too long yet but hasn't frozen up yet. I'm working from home tomorrow so will try and give it some proper running time then. Thanks Quote
Vr5fx Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 It looks like we are making progress. 4 sticks of RAM is normally fine, running in pairs (evens) is preferred to running in odd numbers (1, 3, ect). If your motherboard has BLUE and BLACK RAM slots keep to one colour, so put 2 sticks in the same colour. This allows dual channel which improves performance as long as they are a matching pair. Are you able to identify any markings on the RAM sticks? This is sometimes a white sticker with some numbers. If they are overly different it could cause some issues. Otherwise, you could clean the contacts on all the RAM modules with a pencil eraser, and reinsert them, ensuring they are firmly installed, and see if the problem shows again. Let us know how you get on. :) -Vr Quote AMD FX 6100 @ 3.9Ghz / Asus M5A99X EVO 990X / G-Skill 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz RipjawsX / Zotac GeForce GTX 660 Ti / Corsair TX 750W V2 PSU / Antec Kuhler 620 / Win7 64 / NZXT Tempest 410 Elite / NZXT 6 channel fan controller / Kingston 240GB HyperX 3K SSD / 1TB HDD Intel Pentium G2020 2.90GHz / Gigabyte GA-Z77N-WIFI / Kingston 4GB DDR3 1600MHz HyperX Genesis / Corsair 430W CXM / Fractal Design Node 304 Mini ITX Case / 2TB WD Greenhttp://steamsignature.com/status/default/76561197986113115.png
KenB Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 I think Ken meant RAM, the memory sticks plugged into the motherboard. Thanks Nev ..... yes I missed the "M" off ..... I have been back and corrected it. Fed It looks as if one of your RAM modules could be causing the problem. Follow Vr5fx advice ...... You need to identify which specific module is causing the problem. Your machine should run OK on 3 ..... but if not > just put 2 modules in the same coloured slots. Fed Posted April 12, 2013 Author Posted April 12, 2013 I haven't had time to toy around with different configurations, but here's some pics of how I currently have it set up which seems to be running fine.
