Plastic Nev Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Alan. Can you have a look in device management please, to get there click "Start" then "Run", copy and paste this below into the box and click OK. devmgmt.msc When the device manager box opens, scroll down the list till you find "Sound, Video and game controllers", click the arrow on the left to expand it. Are there any red or yellow marks against anything in there? It depends on what you find there as to which way we go next. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Plastic Nev Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Hi, OK although it looks like all is OK in device manager, from what I have been able to find out the error code can still be drivers corrupt or hardware gone duff. Hopefully it is just drivers. So please go back to device manager, click the small arrow, then double click the next item to appear, it should open a box. Take note of the name of the box please as I may need to know whether it is Realtek AC97, or other make of sound system. Does it say "This device is working properly"? Then next click on the tab for drivers. Some options may be grey and unusable, however there should be one option that says either "Disable" or "Enable". If it says "Enable" please click on it to enable it and check the sound system then If it says "Disable" then please ignore it. "Update driver" is the next to try. If it says the driver is up to date, and there is still no change, to ensure the driver is replaced with one not corrupted, click the uninstall. Once Windows has removed the driver, shut down completely and then reboot the computer, Windows should then search for the correct driver and re-install the most up to date available. Let us know how you get on with that first, it may be all that is needed. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. a p r Posted April 20, 2013 Author Posted April 20, 2013 Hi Nev from sound video and game, 1st drop down is audio codecs, 2nd drop down is legacy audio drivers from general tab both device status say working properly and there is know driver icon or driver update option on ether. Hope that makes sense im working night this week so i mite not get back to you strait away many thanks Alan Quote
Plastic Nev Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Hi again I should have asked if there is a loudspeaker icon on the bottom task bar over to the right near the clock. If not one there, and considering there is nothing regarding Realtek or other manufacturer in what you are seeing in device manager, it is looking like a hardware failure. If there is a speaker icon, what do you see if you double click on it? Also, one other thing that might be worth a look at, how long since the sound went off? Have you looked at system restore back to a time before the sound failed? Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. a p r Posted April 21, 2013 Author Posted April 21, 2013 Hi Nev no speaker icon, sounds been off for about 2 months now maybe longer, i haven't tried system restore Quote
Plastic Nev Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 Hi Alan, do have a look at system restore, you may have a restore point early enough to try. All data will be safe but any software installed after that date you restore to will have to be re-installed. If you can restore back to a point in time when you know the sound was working, and it comes back, be careful when re installing any software the restore may loose, just in case it was one of them that caused it to fail. If the sound still doesn't work after a restore, then we may be looking at failed hardware as your computer is a little on the old side now, and things can go. if it is hardware, then a sound card can be bought fairly cheaply which in many cases does give you sound back, sometimes even of better quality too. a p r Posted April 27, 2013 Author Posted April 27, 2013 Hi Nev tried system restore it would only let me go back to Jan 25th 2013 it made thing quicker but still no sound. before asking for your help i went on the emachine site but without warranty cover they passed me to a driver up date site which scanned my computer and then offered a driver update if i paid x amount, would you know if these sites are to be trusted and do they work. Many thanks Alan Quote
Plastic Nev Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 Hi again Alan, I wouldn't pay for driver updates, especially as neither of us are sure it is only a driver problem, there seems to be more wrong than just a driver missing or corrupt. Besides the main chipset manufacturers seldom charge for their drivers, so always better going to them rather than paying for them from the computer manufacturer. So after a little searching I found the motherboard should be Intel and number Intel d915gag. A look at the motherboard and see if that number is anywhere on the motherboard will confirm it. If so, Intel do provide all drivers and usually free, it may be worth while downloading the full driver set and installing that just in case it is main chipset drivers needed. Have a look here for the Intel drivers= https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Desktop+Boards&ProductLine=Intel%C2%AE+915+Express+Chipset+Family+Boards&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Desktop+Board+D915GAG Select first your operating system, then select the drivers. Then scroll down the list, you will find the Realtek audio drivers there, try them first. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. a p r Posted May 2, 2013 Author Posted May 2, 2013 Hi i'm not sure what the mother board is so i'm guessing it's the main printed board inside which i had a look at couldn't see the reference number any where on the board, there are 2 oblong stickers with numbers on but not matching. So i went on the intel site following your link and was asked for the model of my computer which it found no match for. So it's back to you my friend for my next move. Regards Alan Quote
Plastic Nev Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 OK Alan. lets see if we can get some more information, I would like you to download and install Speccy from Piriform here- http://www.piriform.com/speccy Once installed, open it and then on the first summary page it should give some basic details of the motherboard, the make, and model. Also there should be basic details of the sound system. If you can highlight and copy those and then paste them into your next reply please. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? a p r Posted May 5, 2013 Author Posted May 5, 2013 Audio Sound Card Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device Playback Device Modem #0 Line Record Recording Device Modem #0 Line Playback Hi Nev any help Quote
Plastic Nev Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Hi Alan, that is not what I expected at all, however it is telling us the hardware is there, so I think we have to try the driver download from Intel next as we now know it is the correct motherboard, here is that link again,- https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Desktop+Boards&ProductLine=Intel%C2%AE+915+Express+Chipset+Family+Boards&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Desktop+Board+D915GAG First select the operating system, in your case Windows XP Home edition, then select drivers. The list of drivers for your board then appears on the left, scroll down till you find- Audio: Realtek ALC xxx Driver. Try that and we will see what happens next. Nev. a p r Posted May 7, 2013 Author Posted May 7, 2013 Hi Nev done that still no sound wizard pop up box saying new hardware found click next, then next box says hardware was not installed can not find necessary software for PCI device. Regards Alan Quote
Plastic Nev Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Hum, not looking good Alan, I am concerned now that some part of the sound hardware has died, however I will ask for a second opinion on that just to be sure. If I am correct though a cheap sound card will get you sound again, but was hoping it was only drivers. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. KenB Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Hi Alan / Nev I have been on the e-machines site and can find no reference to emachine 5250 There is a T5052 Could this be it ? Start > Run ....type in dxdiag ....ENTER You should be able to test sound here. You could take a look in the BIOS there may be an option to disable / enable sound. There is a hardware vendor detection link from the e-machines website Run this and see what it says re: audio device click here Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Plastic Nev Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Hi Alan do follow KenB's advice first, he has a few good points. Any problem in getting into the BIOS just ask. One thing has just come to mind though, has the computer already got a sound or video/graphics card added do you know? I was originally thinking the sound was the usual on the motherboard, yet the information from Speccy, just might mean there has been a sound or video/graphics card added at some point. Nev. The reason i need the sound working is so i can get into high res music down loads but i suspect my computer not up to the job, would be worth while upgrading my currant computer to be able to play high res music by maybe a larger external hard drive more memory better sound card. Hop this gets to you Alan Quote
a p r Posted May 11, 2013 Author Posted May 11, 2013 Hi KenB click on sound tab, test direct sound, in notes test results failure at step 3 {direct sound create] : HRESUIT=0x8878000a the request failed because direct sound resources such as the priority level, were already in use by another caller. Clicked on music tab same message in notes. opened vendor detection , headed Gateway left side Category Lan, Modem, VGA / right side Vendor Intel, Smart Link, Intel. Regards Alan Quote
KenB Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 Hi ( Assuming XP ) Click on Start > Run ....type in ....mmsys.cpl ......ENTER Click on the Audio tab Confirm that the sound card that you want to use is displayed in the Default Device box under Sound Playback. If the sound card that you want to use is not displayed in the Default Device box, click the sound card that you want to use. ( Down arrow to display options ) Click to select the Use only default devices check box, and then click OK. You will probably need a re-start.
