unable to play dvds or backup.

Can anyone help with the above problem please?

I have an Acer7520 laptop that has w7 pro as the operating system.

When my usual back was due to run a message said the backup had failed and gave an error code 0x81000031.

I tried to run a new complete backup but nothing happens.

I seen on the Internet that i needed to click on restore default libraries which i have tried.

I then noticed that i could not play a dvd as well.The same drive that i use for the backup.It will play music cds though.

Looking in my computer is shows the drive as a cdrom not a dvd rom don`t know if that is normal,but looking in device manager it shows as

a dvd drive HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20N ATA.

I have tried updating the driver.I have uninstalled it and rebooted, it reinstalled itself without curing the problem.

I am now at a loss as to what to do next.

i could not play a dvd as well.The same drive that i use for the backup.It will play music cds though.

There are 2 lasers in the drive - one for DVDs and one for CDs.

It could be that the laser for DVDs has been mis-aligned or damaged.

You could try this:

Remove upper and lower filters

Start > type in .....regedit .....ENTER

Click the > next to each of the following....

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control

Click on Class and you will see lots of keys similar to the one below

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Find this one and click on it.

On the right side you should see upper and lower filters listed.

Right click on each > delete.

Exit the registry and try again.

Downloaded the prog and ran it still no luck.I have discovered that using a third party prog,VLC MEDIA PLAYER, i can play a dvd.So it seems the drive is ok.It will not auto play though and will still not update.

That confirms that the DVD drive is OK. :)

Let's try checking the system files for errors:

Start ....type in .....cmd .....right click on the cmd.exe that appears top left > Run as Administrator

At the prompt type in ...

sfc /scannow......... ENTER

[ note - there is a space after SFC ]

This will scan system files and attempt to correct any errors.

This could be your problem.

If you navigate to :

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Click on the most recent log ( there should only be one )

Can you copy this and paste it here please - it may be possible to identify the problem

( it may not :) )

Getting a bit out of my depth now.I have tried to copy c:\ windows\logs\CBS\CBS.log and paste into the search progs and files box.Left click on cbs and get access is denied.Right click on cbs,open,access is denied.There is not an option to select run as administrator.

Hi,

try the following:

Start ...type in ....cmd ......right click on cmd.exe that appears top left of screen > Run as Administrator

At the prompt type ....

findstr /c:"[sR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt

[ there is a space after findstr ]

This should show the log.

Copy this and past it here please.

If the text file has been produced it will be shown top left of the box that appears

Two problems occur throughout the log:

1 WMP ............Windows Media PLayer. This explains why you could not play DVDs if this is what you were using by default.

2. NlsLexicons ..... in various forms.

I have spent some time trying to find exactly what these are ...... nothing conclusive.

Lots of mentions - but nothing to say exactly what they should do.

Do you have a full install XP disk ( not recovery disks ) ?

If so - we could try a Repair Install ............ this would keep all of your files and data whilst repairing the OS.

Is the problem now backing up ?

Are you using the inbuilt option to back-up ?

Start > type in .....services.msc

Scroll down to Volume Shadow Copy.

If this is set to Manual or Auto this is OK - if Disabled you need to enable it by right clicking on it > Properties

Set it to "Manual" in the Startup Type window.

Hi sorry for poking my nose in here am wondering Ken would using add remove windows components to uninstall WMP , then rebooting , then going back to add remove windows components and re enabling WMP be worth a shot ?

Hi Armageddon - worth a try.

I was concentrating on the backing up problem as VLC seemed to solve the DVD playing for the time being.

volume shadow copy is set to manual.the problem is still unable to backup using the inbuilt option and the dvd not auto playing.As a matter of interest windows media player is not listed in programmes and features.
