Hi, hope I'm posting this in the right place!

I have an ipod classic, i've also itunes installed on my pc (windows xp home ed). Itunes does not seem to locate my ipod, therefore i can't sync it. My aim was to upload some of my music (stored in pc) onto my ipod.

I know it sounds silly but I can't work it!!!

Any help would be appreciated, cheers.

Benji

thank you seedy21. No, when i plug in my ipod into pc via usb port, it doesn't seem to recognise it. I'd expect to see the ipod coming up on my list of devices with removable storage or something! I can't find it in itune either (I'd expect to see it listed so i can sync it. Sync option not even available actually, ie: it's there, but not hilighted)

Hmm something doesn't sound like it connecting correctly. Do you use this cable to Charge it? If so try charging it to see if that works.

If possible try another Cable and connect to the computer to rule the cable out .

the cable is working, as it is charging correctly (it's the only cable that came with it anyway). My girlfriend used to have a shuffle, and i never managed to work that one out too, same problem. Is that common of apple products to not be straightforward? I've been using computers for donkey's years, always find my way around any problem of any type, but never seem to be able to do so with shuffles or ipods, etc!!!

I'm really puzzled as to why that would be!

Thats great, so it sounds like we can rule this out.

Sometimes they just need a Restart

Try this without the iPOD connected to the computer, then when you have completed the instructions plug it in and see what we get.

[h=2]Reset[/h] To reset your iPod:

  • 1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  • 2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.http://images.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/images/5rs_reset_clickwheel.png
    Tip:
    • If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
    • If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.

thanks for your help seedy, i followed your instructions, and also checked the link you gave me, followed more instructions there. Nothing will do. Very bizarre. The Apple logo does not even appear on the ipod. In fact, nothing happens when i press and hold both menu and select buttons simultaneously. I can't figure it out! Even in Itunes's own help section, they explain how to set ipod up and sync it... I have the latest version of itunes, and yet, some of the functions they show in their tutorial are not present at all in my itunes version!!! I'm baffled! lol

Hmm how odd that you didn't get it restart.

How old is the Ipod?

I would try again but hold the buttons down for 20-30 Seconds. Also may sure that the hold button is slided to the off mode.

the ipod's brand new. It would help though if the manufacturer would simply write on/off on the on/off slide button! Anyway, I tried all that, still nothing working. Also, the ipod is fully charged, I know that for sure, but when i switch it on, the hourglass logo appears on the screen, and just stays there, no menu appearing now!!! Not sure what's going on here lol???

I must say i'm not impressed by the products of this particular brand: No on/off indication / manufacturer having to explain on their website how to press a simple button / etc, does not bode well, I find (I mean pressing a button should not have to be explained really). Have they tried too hard, and ended up with products that just don't work (Shuffle never worked for me either, same brand)???

Thanks for the help by the way, very much appreciated

Ok, if its brand New Product I would take it to a Apple Authorised Service Provider as they come with a 1 Year limited Warranty.

My grandson has a Ipod Touch. Often times when I open Itunes it does not see the device.

Sometimes I can close and open Itunes and it works. Sometimes I have to disconnect the cable to get it to work. Sometimes I have to do both. Worse still I sometimes have to reboot.

Granted I have Windows 7 so that might make a difference but I never have a problem with any other USB device.

The Apple logo does not even appear on the ipod

Forget Itunes and sync. Is the Ipod even working or turning on?

Sounds exactly like what I've experienced. Sometimes it takes ages to turn on (if it ever does, that is). Not impressed by the technology, but a relative bought that as a present for my 7 year old son, and he would be disappointed if I said to him the ipod's not great, best off forgetting about it, son. I can't do that, really! So, I'm trying hard lol!!!
