Not sure if this is the right place to post this but what the heck. So I've been given a desktop for free because it's broken, I was initially going to just take the hard drive and bin it but it seems to turn on fine (no error beeps on start up). The problem is I'm not great at this sort of thing and I don't really know what's wrong with it, so here's a run down of what's going on:

The monitor gets no signal from the tower (the monitor works)

The keyboard and mouse get nothing either (no lights etc.)

I also can't turn the tower off with the power button

However the usb ports seem to work and as I said it turns on fine. I'm really tempted to just stick with the original plan and get rid, but if it's not that difficult to fix (or at least figure out what's going wrong) I'd rather do that and have a free desktop obviously. Any ideas what I can do next/what the issue might be?

Hi, welcome to the forum.

Can we get some more information about the PC, like the brand, and maybe the model number? Unless it is a self build it should have some markings and a model number on the case.

As well as the above, do you know what components do what and where they are situated inside the tower? As an example, the RAM modules, Power supply, Ect. If not, don't worry.

Please feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks :)

It's an emachines E4252, I know what the RAM and HD look like, other than that I'm not really familiar with the other components

Although some things appear to turn on, but not all, I suspect a possible power supply problem as being the first to check. If no spare available to try, you can check the supply with a multimeter set to volts.

If no meter available, the other way is remove the power supply and connect to another computer and see if it works.

If you have a meter, let us know as we can give you a link for which connections should provide what in voltage.
