Just done a broadband speed check on my old Dell Dimension PC. As my internet seems to have slowed to a crawl for a while now.

The result was surprising...........0.5MB/s

Asked my son to try the same test on his ipod touch ,came out at nearly 5.0MB/s

My PC has a direct link to my router, whilst my son was obviously wireless.

Anyone have any ideas of what the problem could be? It used to work fine!

Hi, first thing to come to mind is the cable, have you tried changing that?

Hi

Does your PC have wireless capability ?

If so - what speed do you get using that ?

Are you running 2 firewalls at once ?

Are you running 2 AVs at once ?

Hi

Not that I know!

Turned off microsoft firewall & download speed has gone up to over 2MB/s

Still not the 5MB/s my son can get!

I am also running Microsoft security essentials.

As far as I know that is all that's loaded on my PC.

It is better watching streamed vid or listening to music on the net. But regularly stops as my play rate catches up with the download rate & stops, almost like it goes to sleep/forgets what it's doing, if that makes sense? Then eventually it will start again. Damn frustrating!

Hi - sorry for taking so long to get back to you.

Download MBAM from here:

You want the FREE version. You will get re-directed to a Mirror Site ....this is OK.

Install > update it > run

It will produce a log in Notepad.

Copy this and post it here please.

A few things to add.............

It took approx 45 minutes to download Malware

Windows XP works fine

Sometimes when I try to load pages or log in (particularly if I have been on one site for a long time) it's as if my PC forgets what it's been asked to do. I have to close my browser & re-open for it work properly.

This could be due to the poor connection speed - it should not have taken anywhere near that long.

I don't think it is worth getting one of our security experts in at this stage - based on your MBAM log.

Can you disable the firewall again and also open Essentials and take "Real Time Scanning" off.

Try the connection again.

Remember to enable both again.

==========

If you are using Internet Explorer click on Tools > Manage Add Ons

Disable all Add-Ons

You can do this by clicking on the individual Add-On .....there should be a box to "Disable"

Do you get the same slow connection speed if you use a different browser ?

============

Have you tried a different connection port on the router ?

============

Do you have another computer that you can connect via cable to the router ?

This would let us know if it was your machine specifically or a router problem.

Hi Ken

1. I disabled both firewall & security essentials which made no difference.

2. I have tried with 3 different browsers, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome & Firefox. All have the same problem.

3. I have tried to set up a wireless connection, but cannot get connected. There is a connection there, but all I get is acquiring network address over & over, which it cannot do. (using a netgear wireless usb adapter)

4. I tried the other three connection ports on my router, but they didn't seem to work at all. Do I need to re-configure a connection for the other ports? Or should they just work automatically?

It can't be the wireless part of the router as My wife's, daughters & sons laptops all work fine.

So I am presuming there must be a fault on my PC?

What would I need to look at?

Do me a favour please - try one of them with a wired connection and let me know what the connection speed is like.

They should just work.

Let me know what the speed is like on a different computer ( wired ).

Hi Ken

Your help is much appreciated.

Did two cable speed checks & two wireless speed checks on the wife's laptop.

Cable checks.....

1. 2.79 MB/s

2. 1.60 MB/s

Wireless checks..

1. 5.79 MB/s

2. 5.60 MB/s

I think you have found the problem mate!

Surely the wired check should be better than the wireless?

I do have a new router at hand, but I would need help setting it up as I don't think they are plug & play?

Hi,

Surely the wired check should be better than the wireless?

It shouldn't be any worse - and if anything a bit better.

Looks like the router is at fault as you so rightly suggest.

I do have a new router at hand

What is the make and model number of this please?

I am off out in about 30 mins - will need to pick this up tomorrow.

Hi

If you are going to give that a try the manual for it is here:

It should have come with a CD.

If you have this then the set-up should be no problem - there is a "wizard" that will guide you through.

Yep! That's cured it...........average 6.5 + MB/s download speed with ethernet connection.

Was easy to set up once I'd found out the username & password for my broadband.

Thanks so much for your help Ken.

Once again top site!

Steve
