New Fan?

The fan on my Dell Dimension 2300 is noisy on start up, quietens down after it's been running for about 15 mins.

 

Been looking to replace the fan, but am having trouble locating one.

 

Anyone know where I can get a new or refurbed one?

 

I took the fan out & pulled it apart from the housing. It is mounted on some rubber bungs. Needless to say with an old machine they have fallen apart, probably accounts for some of the noise! So I need to replace these aswell.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Steve, which fan is it, the CPU or if fitted the case fan?

 

After a look round I found this UK supplier, might be of help. A lot of other replacement fans were unfortunately in the USA.

Sorry Nev for the late reply, forgot all about this.

 

It's the Fan that's shown in the link you posted.

 

Just got to check that is the correct fitment & I should be good to go. I think from the description he can also supply the little rubber mounts.

Just placed an order through the link you gave.

Don't know if it will work though, strange little site. Even though it says UK, I'm pretty sure (if the fan is sent!) it's from the US.

Payment is COD, which I find a little odd! The seller has got to lay out some cash to send. Shrug! I don't know! But at least I haven't given any card details.

Sent them an email for confirmation, so will wait & see.

Had a reply.

They cancelled the order as they are having problems with their UK site!

As I thought, a US company.

They did say I could re-order using their US site.

Not sure if I will bother yet, got use to the fan now.

 

But import tax will need to be paid, been caught like that before, makes things very expensive especially if Royal Mail go anywhere near it.

Hi Steve, a bit annoying that is when companies advertise stuff then go back on it and can't supply after you have ordered it.

 

What sort of noise is it making, does it sound like a metallic whine or scraping or hiss type of sound, or more a general whirring rumble?

 

It may be the bearings on the shaft getting worn, some earlier fans you could just see enough of the shaft to run some light oil onto it so it works its way in from there, both at the front where the blade is and sometimes at the back end of the motor. Unfortunately more modern fans are a lot more enclosed and you can't do that.

As with most things now, built for life and when that expires, throw it and get a new one!
