Hi

I purchased this laptop about 18 months ago. It started developing problems about six months ago with the touchpad not working/responding appropriatly to gestures, and on other occasions when watching movies, typing or whatever activating itself. I tried re installing drivers checked for any update to the drivers etc but the problem remained. I used an external mouse for a while after manualy disabling the touchpad from mouse settings and seemed to be ok, however the same problem started occuring with the external mouse about a few days ago while I was doing some word processing and in a fit of rage I manualy shut the xomputer from the power button as it had become totaly unresponsive. Stupid, maybe, I know.

When I powered the laptop back up it would not boot into windows and I was faced with a black screen saying windows is loading files on near the bottom and pogress bar below the message, which when full went back to empty and started refilling again, on continuoes loop.

I switched off from the power button after about half hour of the above and on start up selected F4 samsung recovery console option from where I attempted a Complete System restore, however during the process about half way through a error appeared saying "error writing to disk". I tried re attempting 4-5 times each time getting the same message.

I then burned a windows installation cd from iso image, booted up the dvd and ran chkdsk /r command and left it running overnight, it was at 11% when I hit the sack. When I woke up it was still at 11% and thinking it had frozen I switched off and on again from the power button. HOWEVER on power up there is a clicking noise from the hdd and it will not boot with the cd, gets stuck on starting windows screen. PLEASE HELP!!

Hi and welcome to ExTS

Not good.

A clicking hard drive is dead or dying - it sounds as if yours has died.

I then burned a windows installation cd from iso image

Where did you d/l the ISO image from ?

I looks like a new HDD is needed ( there is no guarantee that they will last longer than 18 months - in fact they have been known to die within weeks )

Is there no way to retrieve data from the hdd?

Also could you advise how to get my laptop up and running again, ive already purchased another hdd (WD Scorpio blue 500gb) which has arrived today, im ok installing it into the laptop but what steps should I take after i.e when ready to power it up?

Also any suggestions with regards to the damn touchpad/ external mouse problem would be appreciated!

Thanks

Hi

No problems with the ISO :)

I did write something on the very same subject here:

http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/14964-Re-Install-Win-7-on-OEM-Legal-Download

Your ISO needs to exactly the same OS that was on your system originally.

You will need the Product Key from the Microsoft sticker on the underneath of the laptop.

You will also need to phone to activate.

This is automated - nobody on the other end.

The mousepad problems should sort themselves out with the re-install.

There are one or two things that we can try to get access to your drive.

The clicking is made by the read head knocking against a stop as it arcs across the disk looking for data that it cannot find.

Ok heres where im at now. Changed the hdd and have got windows up and running. Ive placed the old hdd in an external case and connected to the laptop, it detects the connection an attempts to install drivers however fails in doing so.. I currently cannot connect to the internet either due to drivers being required for the wireless card... Once I connect to the internet would this problem with the external connection be resolved? will windows search and install the required drivers automaticaly from the internet? or does this mean hdd is dead?

Also the problem with the touchpad is still present.

No - I am afraid not.

If you haven't found the drivers for the wireless adapter post your pc make and model number - we may be able to find them using that.

Also the problem with the touchpad is still present.

That must be a physical problem - unless Windows has not installed the drivers for this too.

The pc make and model number will let us find out if it is separate drivers.

also with regards to me retriving data from the old hdd..... does this mean the drive is dead as windows fails to load drivers for it? or do i need to find and install drivers for it manualy?

Windows should recognise the HDD as such and automatically install the drivers for it.

One thing you can try that occasionally has a degree of success is to wrap the drive in cling-film then put it in a plastic bag.

Try to get all of the air out to stop condensation.

Put it in the freezer over night.

Connect it up again and try.

This is rather odd behaviour - but it has had limited results ........worth a try :)

The drivers for your machine are here:

You need to click on "Drivers"

wow! thats quite a long list of drivers which ones do I need!? Also could I download them on another computer and then burn onto dvd and install them in the laptop? If yes could you tell me how, I have imgburn on another computer what I used to burn the windows recovery disk iso image with, but i am unsure if i can use it to do this.

Thanks man

Hi Mikey, Indeed you can do exactly that and though I don't know imgburn, I assume it can be set to burn disks as ISO images as you said you burned the Windows disk. Just set it the same way.

As for which drivers to download, you will possibly need to know which bit of hardware is installed in your machine as I see from that list there is a choice of Broadcom or Atheros for the wireless LAN, sometimes it doesn't matter as the correct driver installs and the incorrect one is rejected.

Also do you know if you installed Windows 7 64bit or windows 7 32bit as some drivers are 64bit only.

Ken may have better information though as to which drivers to download for install, though I notice there is a driver for the touch pad, you will need that and hopefully that one will sort the pad out.

Good question.

You need to get internet access - so LAN drivers and Wireless divers are a must.

You need the 64 bit ones for your system.

Unfortunately it is difficult to tell which specific ones as you have no way of knowing which specific Wireless Adapter you have.

It will be a case of trial and error until you get the right one.

Try clicking on Start .....type in ....devmgmt.msc ....ENTER

Click the > next to Network Adapters.

What is listed ?

If you have a cable to connect to the router ( ethernet cable ) try the LAN drivers first.

You can also d/l the Touch Pad driver.

You could save these to a memory stick if you wish.
