Hi Starbuck,

I do have a little problem. I have two things on my desktop that I wanted to delete but it comes up with a message,

"cannot delete file. cannot read from the file or disk"

What is wrong and how can I delete them?

Thanks

One of them is in called Abba and the other is OTL. I had two OTL's on there. Not sure how it happened.

How do you check Desktop.ini?

Hi Quirkie

One of them is in called Abba and the other is OTL.

No idea what the Abba file is.

Is it a file or a folder?

If it's a folder is there anything inside when you open it?

The OTL one is nothing to worry about, we'll clear that when we run the final steps.

How do you check Desktop.ini?

Sometimes you will see Desktop.ini files appear when 'Hidden Files' are set to be shown.

They will have Desktop.ini written under them.

Once we know what this Abba file/folder is, we will finish off the cleaning process.

The Abba is a folder and it's empty.

This was on the computer when I got this laptop from a friend a couple of weeks ago.

Hi Quirkie

The Abba is a folder and it's empty.

and is this the folder that is giving the following message when you try to delete it?

"cannot delete file. cannot read from the file or disk"

It may be that the folder was incorrectly named.... as far as Windows is concerned.

Have you tried to rename the folder?

Right click on the folder and select rename....

Try this and see if it works.

If not...

Right click the folder and select properties.

Let me know the full address/location of the folder and the Folder name as shown in the properties box.

Thanks

This is what I found. I opened up my documents and didn't see any abba in it

Could you not rename the folder?

How is abba spelt..... Any capitals?.... any characters after the word abba? ..... is there a full stop etc?

I need the correct spelling, then we can try and remove it using command prompt.

I could rename it but still could not delete it.

The first letter is capital. Abba. When I open up the folder it says More Abba Gold. It's empty

Hi Quirkie

Instead of using Command Prompt, we'll try OTL.

By using Otl we can add a wildcard after the word Abba just in case there's any characters we've missed.

Double click on OTL to run it.

Copy the lines in the codebox below. (make sure that :Otl is on the first line )

:otl

:Files
C:\Documents and Settings\deborah dickerson\Desktop\Abba*

  • Return to OTL,
  • right click in the Custom Scans/Fixes window (under the blue bar) and choose Paste.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/new%20forum/scan-fix.png

  • Click the red Run Fix button.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/runfixbutton.png

  • OTL will reboot your system once the fix has completed.
  • After the reboot, you may need to double click OTL to launch the program and retrieve the log.

Copy and paste the contents of the OTL log that comes up after the fix in your next reply.

if you lose the report, there will be a copy here:

C:\_OTL\MovedFiles

Note:

I haven't added the 'EmptyTemp' command, so if you have reinstalled MBAM..... the fix should still run without a problem.

It's odd that OTL reports:

File\Folder C:\Documents and Settings\deborah dickerson\Desktop\Abba\More Abba Gold not found!

But is actually there, but empty.

As this folder wasn't created by you, let's check and see if it was made a private folder or what the settings actually are.

Right click on the folder and select properties

Now click on the Sharing tab:

Is there a tick against... Make this folder private?

When you acquired this system, did you not make your own account and start with a fresh desktop?

Are you using the same account to log in as the previous owner?

Ok, I checked the properties and nothing is checked.

When I got this laptop I went to user account and changed it to my name.

When I got this laptop I went to user account and changed it to my name.

Ar right, this may have something to do with it then.

The folder would have been created in a user account with one set of Admin permissions and now is trying to be removed from the basically the same account with a different set of Admin permissions.

It would have been better to log on to the old account when you received the system, set up a new Admin account in your name and then removed the old account using the new one.

This would have given you a fresh desktop and to start afresh with all new Admin permissions without any conflicts.

If i was you, i'd do that now.

Start >> Control Panel >> User Accounts.

Click Create a new account in the Pick a task list box.

Type the name that you want to use for the account, and then click Next.

Select the desired account type, (It must be Administrator) and then click Create Account.

Obviously add a strong password for this account.

Use the new account from now on.

Leave the old account on the system for a few days just to make sure everything is running ok.

After a few days, remove the old account using the new one.

Note:

All the programs on the system will still be available to you from the new account.
