I have a hp laptop running on windows 7, it worked fine 3 hours ago but now will not boot properly. It turns on after 2 seconds turns off and then about 4 seconds later turns on again by itself. The fans run and the lights on caplocks and wifi come on. The screen does not come on and the there are no beeps to indicate a fault. The fan continues to run until I turn it off but nothing else happens. I have tried removing the hard drive, ran disconnecting the battery and running off of mains powe and using a hdmi cable and external monitor to make sure it wasn't just a display problem. I am now at a loss and need help

Hi and welcome to ExTS

and the there are no beeps to indicate a fault.

Did your laptop used to beep ( once ) on boot-up ? ( many do not )

There is a limit to what we can do with a laptop as they are so difficult to work on.

Try taking the RAM modules out.

They will be under one of the panels in the base of the machine.

The mechanism should hinge forwards to allow you access to them.

Clean the contacts with a pencil eraser and put just one back.

Try booting up now.

If no luck swap the RAM over and try booting off the other one.

Let us know the results.

I think it did

If it did used to beep - and now doesn't - then it sounds like a motherboard problem.

You have tried the RAM and removed the hard drive.

There is not much else you can try in this instance.

I think this is a job for a local tech.

If you decide to take it to a small, local shop ask first how much they charge for an assessment of the problem.

Some will give you an opinion for no charge.

Also - you need to make sure that what is on the hard drive is recovered.

We can advise on this if you wish - as your local tech will usually charge for this service.

You have already taken the HDD out so all you need is an adapter to connect it to the USB port of a working computer.
