Armageddon Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 I agree with Nev the answer to the first 3 is a resounding yes , now question 4 is a bit more difficult but I think you wouldn't need to take action as each os would see its assigned partition as C:/ so for example in xp you'd have your xp os as C:/ then the win 7 partition as say D:/ then your external as E:/ Data , then in win 7 it would be the reverse C:/ win 7 D:/xp , and the external as E:/ Data , as for the jumpers Nev will advise further but I personally have never bothered with them on SATA drives Quote Google is your friend We are all members helping other members. Plastic Nev Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Hi Ian, the SATA drives don't need the jumper thing moved as unlike the older IDE which connected with the broad multiple conductor ribbon cable that had one plug in use and one spare. If using the spare, one drive would have the jumper in the master position the other would go to the slave position. SATA on the other hand has to be connected direct to the motherboard for each drive, so I hope you have a spare connector on the motherboard. You cannot double up on the same data lead, the power supply side can be, and there are connectors available for that, but not for the data cable. Quote Need help with your computer problems? grandadfatboy Posted June 16, 2013 Author Posted June 16, 2013 Hi, before I give youan update on my progress I would like to thank you all once again foryour replies and advice. I find I'm now reading more and trying togain as much pc knowledge as I can so that I may be able to helpmyself more in the future. Despite my very limited pc knowledge Ihave been treated with respect and given plenty of information anddetail when I have asked questions and I truly appreciate that. I discovered my motherboard has 6sata connections, so plenty of connectivity. After backing up my dataI installed the drive from my old pc into the new one anddisconnected the power cable from the drive already installed. I thenmade a partition of 100gb and installed Windows XP without anyproblems. I then installed all the hardware drivers. Once completed Ichecked with Device Manager to make sure I had no yellow ??'s. Nonefound so a good start. I then installedWindows 7 after making a fresh partition of 100gb for that. Driverinstallation went like dream and both operating systems haveMicrosoft Security Essentials installed. I made a note of the restorepoints in Windows 7 and will see if any get deleted. Will check whenXP has installed all the Microsoft updates. The pc starts and I getthe option to start either version of Windows, which is one lessthing I need to worry about and rectify. Update: Duringin the XP updates from Microsoft the pc restarted and I booted intoWindows 7 to check if XP was deleting Windows 7's restore points andthe 3 that were showing previously had been deleted. I rebooted intoXP and installed the Stop XP patch from this forum. I have checkedsince installing that patch and I'm happy to report XP is no longerdeleting restore points so great advice guys. I will obviously keepyou all informed of how things progress, but I would like to saythank you for all the help and advice. You have inspired me to dothings with and within my pc that I would previously shied away from, and having done so I wondered why I hadn't done it before. Isuccessfully removed the firewire pci card from the old pc andreinstalled it into the new pc. I'm wondering where my new foundconfidence is going to take me next and all thanks to this forum andit's knowledgeable members. All the best. Ian Quote

grandadfatboy Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 Thank you Nev. I'm pleased to say that so far my only hiccup was XP deleting restore points in Windows 7, which I corrected with the patch linked on one of the replies on this thread. I'm in the middle of installing the software for XP and all is going well. Once again a big thank you to everyone on this forum for their help. I'm very sure I will be joining discussions and enjoying learning process well into the future. All the best. Ian Quote
