melpear Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 My wife uses pre-loaded CD-ROM’s for making greetings cards;we print off images which are stored on the CD’s. We use several differentproducers of these & they cost about £20 each, with one particular make, whenever we play one of their CD’s & get to a certain point, an image fromanother CD appears, which is one I have not used for 12 months. I have been in touch with the manufacturer & they statethat all of their CD-ROM’s are closed and cannot be written onto so this rulesout faulty CD’s. They suggest & I quote ‘that the image could be stuck orcopied across somewhere in the RAM or onto the CD-Drive’. I upgraded from XP to Windows 8 (clean installation) lastDecember but strangely the image which is being carried across was created inMay last year. Given the above is there any method I can remove theoffending image from either the RAM or CD-Drive as the manufacturers seem to bebaffled. Quote
KenB Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Hi and welcome to ExTS whenever we play one of their CD’s & get to a certain point, an image fromanother CD appears Do you have a different computer to try this disk on ? the image could be stuck orcopied across somewhere in the RAM or onto the CD-Drive This is not possible. RAM is temporary memory. When you switch off then re-boot the RAM is wiped and starts off again. The DVD CDROM drive has no memory to write to anyway. If you can - try the CD in another machine and if you get the same problem it lies with the disk. Plastic Nev Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Edit:- Ken posted while I was still writing, however, as he says it is impossible for RAM to hold memory after shut down. I ask basically the same though, do try the disk elsewhere. Does this happen with any other of that manufacturers disks or is it just one disk? If it is just that one disk and no others I would try the disk in another computer if possible, if you have only the one computer perhaps a friend can oblige? That will either rule in or out the disk itself, though I do tend to think the manufacturer may be correct and it shouldn't be possible, however it does depend on the type of disk they use and how they record the information onto it. To explain that a little further, most mass produced CD's and DVD's are created by a plastic moulding process, the information is physically moulded into the plastic before the silvering is applied, that type of disk it is impossible to record anything onto it by means of a read/write CD/DVD drive or any other method, as everything is a moulded product. The type of disk that is bought as a blank and can have data information burned onto it is a different thing altogether and the recording is actually a kind of chemical process and it is actually possible to write data over existing data at least once, they do say it shouldn't happen but I have seen it myself, this can be due to the so called closing process, which actually is nothing more than an extra bit of code written onto the disk, not fully recorded or burned in. So if your manufacturer is only running a low volume output, he may just be using the second process and a batch type burner, it is in the end a cheaper method when only low numbers of disks are required. It's only where large volume production is required that the moulding process becomes a cheaper option. So to conclude, it may be possible that somehow an older image has been burned onto that disk even though it is supposedly a closed disk. The only way to be sure is check it out on another computer. Let us know if that can be done please, and what is found if it can. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. melpear Posted June 11, 2013 Author Posted June 11, 2013 We use several different makes of the cd-ROM's but it is only the ones that are manufactured by Card Creation which cause the problems. I have tried these cd's in another PC and they work perfectly. I have taken a screen shot of the offending image which I can attach if that is permitted. It is just one image from an early cd which now reads over to all of the cd's from this particular manufacturer. This image was created about 12 months ago before windows 8 was loaded onto my computer. Quote

I upgraded from XP to Windows 8 (clean installation Maybe you did a Migration install or a transfer. See Here. I'm guessing your images are in fact loading from your drive. It could be in a personal folder or one of the program folders. Maybe even from the MRU list in the folder. Quote We are all members helping other members. Plastic Nev Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 Hi, yes you can attach the image, I think we would both like to see it and maybe have a better idea of what is happening in order to help you with it. Click first on the reply to thread button, then on the bottom right you will see the three buttons, click the middle one for "Go advanced" First write your next reply in the text box, then scroll down to and click the box, "Manage attachments" A smaller box opens, on the tiop line there is a button for "Add Files", click that, then use the next "Select files", to then navigate to the photo you wish to attach. Then you should see the attached file. Finally, click the "Submit reply" button. Until we see that, I cannot honestly think of a reason as to why it is happening. Edit, this time Randy got in before me, LOL. He may have a point, if there is a file name similarity the program may be pulling it off the hard drive rather than the disk. If you know the full name of the original older image, search using the search box and once it is found and you know which folder or sub folder it is in, change the name of the picture to something else. See if that stops it appearing. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. If Free PC Help has helped you then please consider a donation. melpear Posted June 13, 2013 Author Posted June 13, 2013 Hi Nev. Thanks for the reply, I will attempt to clarify the situation & supply a screen shot which I have already taken & sent to the manufacturers of the CD-ROM’s, without success. Basically the CD-ROM’s in question contain images for greetings cards which I print off for my wife who then turns them into cards, each CD is closed and cannot be written onto & nothing can be copied onto my PC however some of these images can be saved as jpegs into a file. A lot of the images have a text editable feature which can be used to personalise the cards & inserts. It is one of these images, which was produced last May, before Windows 8 was installed, which appears when I load CD-ROMS from this manufacturer & this is attached. The brownish coloured A4 image in the middle showing ribbons & tags with the wording Dear Brother & Sister in Law & a picture of a man with a dog is the one produced last May & appears when I open most of the CD-ROM’s from this supplier but not on ones by other suppliers (confusing or what?). As you know Windows 8 does not have the facility to open DVD’s & the technician who loaded this on loaded VLC Media player, which I know you recommend, could this cause any problems? Regards Mel Pearson Quote
Plastic Nev Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I doubt the VLC player has anything to do with it, I still think there is some similarity in file name, so you need to find the old file from last May and either temporarily delete it or change the file name. KenB Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Hi The brownish coloured A4 image in the middle Does this have a file name to reference it? If so - if you go to the search box and type in this reference ...... click on "Files" ......does it show up ? If it does you should get the location. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
melpear Posted June 14, 2013 Author Posted June 14, 2013 I have tried this, but without success, it is difficult to be completely certain what the file reference is as there are hundreds of separate files on the cd but these are embedded and are very difficult to access. This is made more difficult because the files on the cd are blank but there is editable text which as soon as you had text, effectively this creates another file, which is what has happened in this case. I have a dialogue with the manufacturer and will contact him for advice on the file reference. Quote
KenB Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 You could give CCleaner a try. click here DO NOT use the registry option. This will clear out old / unnecessary files. You only need the free version. Plastic Nev Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Hi. That image from last May must be somewhere on your hard drive, do you still have the disk that image came from? There may be a clue as to file numbers either on the disk label, or on the software on that disk if you still have it. Let us know what you can find about that image if you do still have the disk. RandyL Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 These type of programs use their own file type which means they are not the usual picture file types such as .jpeg or .tiff. As such Windows can't open them. Only the program can open them. If you knew the file type that Flowers in Bloom uses for their images you could use Windows Search to find them on your hard drive. The problem is you won't be able to view them unless you choose to open with Flowers in Bloom most likely. If you do that with the wrong file type and had the always open with selected then you might set the default wrong and could cripple the program. If you right click the program shortcut and select properties you can click open file location. This will take you too the program folder. Somewhere in there you will find the images as some sort of file type. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. melpear Posted June 15, 2013 Author Posted June 15, 2013 I have completed searches using different methods & have come up with a file which is similar to the problem one. When I interrogated the CD-ROM I believe the file causing the problem was Archie_Rib.jpg-Windows Photo Viewer, when I did the search it came up with the description http://file://D:/original/JpgTags/Archie_Rib_jpg but it would not let me delete it, drive D on my machine is the DVD/CD player/recorder but there was no CD-ROM in the drive so where is this file lurking? Hope anyone can be of assistance. Regards Mel Pear Quote
Armageddon Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Hi 2 quick questions firstly you said you have tried the CD on a different system , what was the Operating system ? , secondly when you upgraded from xp to 8 did you format the drive ? , what am thinking is when you upgrade operating systems windows creates a windows.old folder with all your documents pics etc in there you could use windows explorer and browse your C:/ to see if that folders exists and if it does delete it Quote Google is your friend We are all members helping other members. Plastic Nev Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Considering you are now running Windows 8 which I don't have knowledge of the finer points of it, however I am thinking there may be a folder somehow attached to the DVD drive which has this Archie_Rib.jpg within it. If you select "Computer" the DVD drive should show there, if no sign of a folder attached there, right click on the drive, if still no sign of a folder, select properties is there one there? If you find a folder of any sort, right click on it and if it is there select "Delete" A folder shouldn't ever be associated with a DVD drive, but is the only thing I can think of now. Nev. Plastic Nev Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Not having Windows 8 myself, I hesitate to say one way or the other on those you link to, other staff here do have W8 so they may know better. Have you tried a right click on the folder or file without the disk in, and is there an option to "Format" in the list? If so try that, it just might at least wipe the contents of the file folder. Otherwise it may just ask you to insert a disk, If it does, then that option is no good, but at least worth a try first. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. KenB Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Hi, FILE://D:/original/JpgTags/Archie_Rib_jpg This is confusing me. When you search for a file the drive or partition that it is held on is reported first. For instance: C:/Users/Ken/My Documents/ExTS File://D: doesn't look right. but there was no CD-ROM in the drive so where is this file lurking? Try this: Point the mouse curser to the top right corner > in the Search box type in Archie_Rib_jpg ( or simply archie ) Click on Apps / Settings / Files in turn If it is on your hard drive this will locate it. Regarding the software that you link to: I am not familiar with any of them. You are right to be wary ............ somebody here may have more information on them than I do.
