Hafoi Bin Ereafower Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 (edited) Promised (ages ago) a view on Windows 8 from the perspective of an aging Vista user who does not bash the keys on a 24/7 basis just dips into the net to ogle (yes that's ogle not google) boats he can't afford, type the odd letter and send the odd e-mail. Oh yes - also run a couple of navigation programmes and watch tv (with a dongle) plus the odd video when afloat. First thing that struck me in starting up my sparkly new Samsung was all the crap that was already installed on the Start screen (not a W8 prob I know) so I set about getting rid of most of it with Revo Uninstaller - that, that very nice man KenB recco'd. (creep) Could then see the wood for the tree's. Oh get on with it ! - - I hear you cry - so big picture is - - W8 works fine once you know your way around but for someone who uses a keyboard and mouse pad to get around the lappy it's basically made no difference to (here comes some jargon) my "user experience". Finding my way around I needed to keep telling myself "this was built for a touchscreen" twbfat, twbfat, twbfat and so on and so on - - otherwise my aging and red wine addled brain cells got confused about where everything was - so some time setting up the Start screen with the icons you want is necessary and of course understanding what is behind them cos they are not absolutely identical to Vista. It took me - but then I don't learn quickly anymore quite some time to stop going "Ooooo where did that come from" - as something appeared on the screen as if by magic just because my fingers had strayed to the sides of the touchpad - - the message here is read all the online help you can get about how the touchpad responds and remind yourself twbfat, twbfat, twbfat. I won't go through all the bits about how it responds (thank God I hear you cry) all I can say is after some weeks of using it I find myself at peace with the world and W8. I'm left wondering though why those very clever people at Microsoft built it this way - not everyone is tec savvy or keyboard/touchpad bright enough to find their way around in minutes. Annnd finally the thing that amuses me (and sometimes irritates) is it takes one click on a Start screen icon to go into something - passing through the old desktop screen as it does so. If you are on the old desktop screen already it takes a double click to get the programme started. Clever devils these Microsoft guy's all that work to save one click !
