Gotalife Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Any advice to where I can get a cheap windows 98 SE computer, West London area. My widows 98 SE has been playing up, sometimes starting for a few weeks then as of today, will not boot in, from what I can see inside there are four little lights, top two go green bottom two are red nothing showing on the screen, when it was working it would show all lights green. I’m no tech as you will gather from past posts on the forum, so any info in simple terms please. Quote

Bluesplayer. Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Hi, I have no idea where you can find a Win 98 SE Pc in West london, sorry. The one that you are working on - if you feel able to. Check inside the Pc. Turn the Pc off - remove the plug from the wall. Once you have opened the case. Touch the metal case to discharge any static. Remove any dust - do not use a vacumm cleaner, too much static. Check that all fans are free of dust and will rotate. Remove Ram - Video cards etc and then Reseat them in their slots. But first - clean the copper connections of the Ram - Video cards with a pencil eraser. If more than one Ram stick - use just one stick at a time installed in your Pc, as a test and see if it will start. Check all cables and connections. Put the case back on the Pc - and see if it will boot to the desktop. Cleaning inside your computer http://tnthelpforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=593 Do Not use suggestion No 5 - in the above link. Gotalife Posted July 11, 2013 Author Posted July 11, 2013 Hi, did all what you suggested, did not have that much dust as I had cleaned it earlier this year, I do the same with my other computer Windows XP. Started the computer, on screen showed it was doing a Memory Test, showed OK after test, then the screen went blank and nothing more happened apart from some bleeps coming from the computer, switched off computer waited five minutes then switched on again, nothing happened other than few lights flicking on and off, the screen stayed blank. KenB Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 apart from some bleeps coming from the computer Could you let us know the sequence ..... 1 long 2 short for instance. Not sure if the BIOS back then used POST ....... Bluesplayer should be able to answer that :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Gotalife Posted July 11, 2013 Author Posted July 11, 2013 This time starting after hour, Switch on, 1 bleep, screen shows Memory Testing, lights show from top to bottom red, green, red, green, screen showing Bios v6.00pg, w6182ms v1.4 101499, Pentium 3, Memory testing: 243904k OK+ 1024k shared memory. The screen stayed on this time with the above showing nothing else happened, switch off and restarted , nothing happened but kept bleeping, switched off. Quote
Bluesplayer. Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Ken will be better to advise you about beep codes - continual beeping usually Ram or Motherboard related. In the Bios - reset to default settings. Save the changes and exit the Bios. Make no other changes while in the Bios. How much Ram do you have installed - did you remove all sticks and try one at a time? The make and model number of the Pc may help us. Quote
Gotalife Posted July 11, 2013 Author Posted July 11, 2013 2 memory sticks, 1: F512mb 2: PC100 128mb. took 1 out and restarted, nothing happened, took 2 out and restarted, long bleep, paused, long bleep, bleep about 2-3 seconds long, pause about 1-2 seconds long. When restarting with both sticks in the computer it did the long bleep/pause/long bleep/pause continuously . I could not do anything in the Bios when it showed before. I only use this computer for my Sage2000 accounting and to print out instruction sheet from another programme for my artworks, so not a lot of memory used. Quote
Bluesplayer. Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 took 1 out and restarted, nothing happened, What happens when you leave this stick of Ram out - is this the 128Mb stick? Computer POST and beep codes http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm Quote
