I recently had my computer cleaned of viruses and the technician installed Avast free spy wear for me. I was told that I should run the soft wear every month or so. I ran it last evening and now I can't do anything with the computer. I can turn it on but nothing else, not even turning it off. I tried to restore but couldn't get to the control panel. Any ideas anyone?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Irene and welcome to ExTS :)

If you can shut the machine down normally - do so.

If it will not shut down in the normal way then pull the plug in the wall. ( assuming desktop )

Switch on and constantly tap F8 about once per second.

You will be taken to the Advanced Startup Options.

Select "Safe Mode"

Will the machine boot up properly from here? ( graphics will look odd due to minimal drivers )

Can you get to Control Panel from here?

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Amazingly, after 24 hours the computer started up normally and is working perfectly now - how odd is that? Thank you very much for your suggestion though, I shall keep it for the next time I run a virus check. Dare I?

They are sometimes like teenagers .......throw a fit and see reason after a while :)

While your machine is OK I suggest that you create a Restore Point ( easy )

Start > Run ....type in ......msconfig ......click ENTER

Click on "Load System Restore" .......follow the prompts to "Create a Restore Point"
