Irene Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 (edited) I recently had my computer cleaned of viruses and the technician installed Avast free spy wear for me. I was told that I should run the soft wear every month or so. I ran it last evening and now I can't do anything with the computer. I can turn it on but nothing else, not even turning it off. I tried to restore but couldn't get to the control panel. Any ideas anyone? Thank you in advance. Edited July 21, 2013 by Irene Quote
KenB Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Hi Irene and welcome to ExTS :) If you can shut the machine down normally - do so. If it will not shut down in the normal way then pull the plug in the wall. ( assuming desktop ) Switch on and constantly tap F8 about once per second. You will be taken to the Advanced Startup Options. Select "Safe Mode" Will the machine boot up properly from here? ( graphics will look odd due to minimal drivers ) Can you get to Control Panel from here? Irene Posted July 21, 2013 Author Posted July 21, 2013 Amazingly, after 24 hours the computer started up normally and is working perfectly now - how odd is that? Thank you very much for your suggestion though, I shall keep it for the next time I run a virus check. Dare I? Quote
