Laptop running slowly

Hiya,

 

My Grandad has asked me to have a look at his Acer laptop as it seems to be running slowly, but I can't find any problems, I wondered if anyone could help me diagnose and repair?

 

The issue -

 

When turning on sometimes the "Windows did not shut down properly" message appears and it offers to run start-up repair (Although this has only happened to my Grandad, not me - I've asked him how he turns the laptop off, and it seems he does it the right way..!)

 

The laptop (Even when not giving an error message) takes an age to boot up, and when running sometimes slows down to an un-usable pace, then at other times, works great.

 

I have tried -

 

MBAM - updated and full scan, no issues

 

MSE - Updated and full scan, no issues

 

ESET - Would not update virus definitions (Error message "Check proxy"), so could not run scan

 

Speedfan - Laptop doesn't seem to be overheating

 

Memtest - No issues

 

Disk cleanup...

 

My original gut instinct was hard drive failure, but Speed Fan has a very basic hard-drive diagnostic jobby built in, and says the hard drive is healthy

 

I've run chkdsk /f on start up, also no issues.

 

I've also checked start-up programs, and there's nothing un-neccessery in there.

Acer Aspire 5734Z Windows 7, 64bit, 4GB DDR3 Ram, Intel Pentium Dual Core T4500 2.3Ghz

 

I don't know what else to look for or do, could anybody provide any suggestions??

Have you tried booting up in Safe mode to see if the boot up speed issue is still there??

 

 

• Turn your computer off through Shut Down.
  
• Wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
  
• Once your computer's manufacturer logo (eg. 'ACeR') starts to show, start pressing the F8 key repeatedly.
  
• Keep pressing it until the Windows Advanced Options Menu loads up.
  
• Make sure 'Safe Mode' is selected, navigate to it by using the arrow keys.
  
• Press enter, and your computer will start booting into Safe Mode.
  

 

 

 

Also i would run in Command Prompted (Run as Administrator) SFC /Scannow

after you have tried safe mode

Is ESET and MSE both installed and running? Having more then one antivirus program running in real time mode can cause this.

I take it that you are talking about the Eset Online Scanner?

I've seen this problem today on another thread that i'm working.

So this may well be an Eset problem.

 

No disrespect to your Grandad, but older people do tend to install things that they don't need.

Especially third party addons when installing a program. (namely Adware)

 

Neither MBAM or MSSE is that good when it comes to Adware detection and removal...... both will miss a lot.

 

You could give this a try.... if there's nothing there, then nothing will be removed.

 

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

• Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  
• Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  
• Click on the Delete button.
  
• A logfile will automatically open after the scan has finished.
  
• Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  
• You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[s1].txt as well.

Hi all, Thanks for the help,

 

seedy21, I turned the laptop on in safemode and it seemed ok, rebooted for non-safemode and the laptop booted up to a black screen with a curser, nothing else. Had to force a reboot to get it to load. Because I forced a reboot, the start-up repair option was shown again, I ran it for the sake of it, and after 10 minutes trying to repair, I got the error message "Setup repair cannot repair this problem automatically"

It's hard to tell, I think it still should be running quicker than it is, but I'm used to a better-spec laptop.

 

I think I'll let him have it back and see what he makes of it, if it's no good I'll post back begging for help with very little dignity, if that's okay?
