joddle Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I have just aquired for a very very modest sum a Dell Latitude D505. As a spare machine it seems almost perfect and as I had a few dead D400s around with 1GB memory sims I decided to use them in the 505. However when I scanned the pc with the Crucial Memory scanner it showed one slot with 2100 and one slot with 2700 memory - each 1gb giving me a total of 2GB - which I think is the top limit for the machne. I also noticed the scanner said that the memory should be 2700 so is the additional 1gb at 2100 slowing my machine down? - and if so is it of real consequence or do I need to upgrade to pc-27000 memory for both sticks. KenB Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Hi, .Double Date Rate (DDR) SDRAM (shared)5 at 333MHz (PC2700); Standard - 128MB; Maximum - 2.0GB; Memory module capacities - 128, 256, 512MB and 1GB This is taken from the system specs for your machine. You are right - 2GB is the max for your motherboard. it showed one slot with 2100 and one slot with 2700 The standard for the m/board is PC2700 but the PC2100 will be OK What will happen is - the machine will run at the slower speed ( ie that of the PC2100 ) You will not notice too much difference I don't think. Plastic Nev Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Hi Joddle, further to Kens good advice the speed of the RAM you have will cover most things except reasonably high gaming. However if you have the latest in high definition video camera, it may not handle that very well, not because of the speed of the RAM, but the quantity. I have found that 2Gb wasn't sufficient, resulting in jerky play back due to there not being enough RAM to allow full buffering of the video data at the speeds required. I installed another 2GB and all was then fine even though it is the slower PC2100 in my desktop. Unfortunately for you 2GB is its limit so sorry to say you wouldn't see the best of HD video playback.
