grandadfatboy Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Hi all, After successfully wiping my daughters laptop and doing a new install I thought I'd give mine a fresh lease of live. I started by installing Windows 7 disc and chose to delete all partions prior to doing the fresh install. I backed up all the data from the drive proir to doing this. I was not permitted to delete a dynamic drive so chose to install to another partition. The install began, stopped and rebooted back the the screen "press any key to boot from cd/dvd", which I did. When it got to the screen to install Windows it showed no hard drive or partions to be able to install it to. I have absolutely no idea what I've done:confused: and I am currently running "startup Repair" which has been running for nearly an hour with no signs of fixing things anytime soon. Any ides please guys, apart from the obvious, don't mess with what I don't really understand. ATB Ian Quote
seedy21 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Hi Grandadfatboy was you having any problems with the machine before you started the re-install??When you complete the install and it asks for where you want to install to, do you have an option to create a partition? grandadfatboy Posted August 13, 2013 Author Posted August 13, 2013 (edited) Hi seedy, Thanks for the quick reply. Other than the pc running slow, hanging indiscriminately and this or that programme is not responding, not really. There was an unallocated space, a dynamic drive and 2 others which I can't recall exactely. Holy c**p, I think I know what I did!!! I deleted the partition that the manufacturer installed, probably for back up. Oh my god, I don't believe it. This is going to be hard to sort! I do have a back up of all the drivers etc on my desktop pc, if that's of any use to me. ATB Edited August 13, 2013 by seedy21 Quote
Ray1000 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Don't worry Ian, no doubt someone on here will sort you out. Even if you have deleted the manufacturer's partition it's no worse than starting with a brand new hard drive. Ray Quote

When you go to install, click on the unallocated space, then click Create Partition, and click create, this should then show on the drives available to install Windows, click the new Partition we have created and start the install. As long as you have a back-up of the Drivers you should be fine :) Quote “It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything.”― Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club http://www.geekstogo.com/downloads/unite_blue.png Need help with your computer problems? grandadfatboy Posted August 13, 2013 Author Posted August 13, 2013 Thanks for the replies. I think it's worse than that. With the Windows 7 disc installed and booted from cd/dvd it installs files and gives me the "pick language screen", then the "Install Now screen" and set up starts, I accept licence terms and select Custom and the "where do you want to install Windows" appears and the options are completely blank. It gives me the options to refresh or load the driver, I installed the cd I made of the drivers and they don't seem to included in the driver backup I did. Now I got to find out the details the HDD and download a driver from manufacturers site. This gonna be a long night guys. Any chance of a cuppa as you go past on your way to work please.:) Quote

KenB Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 The Windows 7 disk .......... is it an original or a copy ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
grandadfatboy Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 Hi Ken, The Windows 7 disc is the one I downloaded from the link at the top of this forum and the same one I used on my daughters laptop. I read a great deal before going to bed this morning at 3am. I said it would be a long night didn't I? Well I spent this morning using diskpart and after many failures I did manage to sort my problem. I did however come up against another couple of small problems. Firstly when picking where to install Windows, I had no option to make further partitions prior to installing Windows. I have also noticed that everytime the pc laptop restarts, it will not boot from cd/dvd despite this drive being the first option in the boot sequence in the bios. Laptop is currently installing 114 updates. I will report back when all installed and reconfigured to my preference. Thank you for all the replies. ATB Ian Quote
KenB Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Hi Ian I had no option to make further partitions prior to installing Windows. If you want to create an extra partition after you have sorted things out it is no problem. You can do this from Disk Management within Windows. I have also noticed that everytime the pc laptop restarts, it will not boot from cd/dvd despite this drive being the first option in the boot sequence Are you trying to boot from the Win7 CD again or something else ? If it is something else - this would need to be a "bootable media" .....e.g. a disk with an operating system on it. grandadfatboy Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 Hi Ken Are you trying to boot from the Win7 CD again or something else ? If it is something else - this would need to be a "bootable media" .....e.g. a disk with an operating system on it. It was just where I left the Windows disk in the drive and throughout all the updates and each time the pc restarted I normally get the message "press any key to boot from cd" but not since installing Windows. KenB Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 but not since installing Windows. So - is all ok now or do you need some more advice? :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
grandadfatboy Posted August 17, 2013 Author Posted August 17, 2013 So - is all ok now or do you need some more advice? :) Sorry for the tardy reply gentlemen, but it's been manic here. The pc is almost back to 'normal' the most annoying one is that some of the keyboard short cuts do not work. Those that do not work are Fn+F3 touchpad disabled; Fn+F7 volume down; fn+F8 volume up. Other than that the pc is much quicker and, so far, not a single hang up or freeze, so in the long run it's been successful. Thanks for your help guys. ATB. Ian Quote
