PEV Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Hi all can someone help with this please? I run Windows XP pro and had successfuly downloaded and used Google Earth in the past until I lost it and everything else to a virus which needed neede a new hard drive. Anyway I have twice tried to download but before download finishes I get message 'has encountered a problem and needs to shut down', then I get the invitation to send report to Microsoft etc. I am then offered a link to fault find which takes me to a page which tells me I need to download a more update version of Google Earth and when I click on that link I am back where I started -- downloading the same again and the same message ! Hope this is not confusing you!!! it certainly is me!!! Any suggestions please? Ray Quote
KenB Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Hi Ray There are some "old" versions of Google Earth here .......... supposed to be XP compatible. Give the most recent a try and see how you get on. Link removed - d/l contained malware !! [ see post below ] NB - I have not used this d/l site before and it is untested. You may wish to d/l the file and scan it before you install. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! PEV Posted August 25, 2013 Author Posted August 25, 2013 Hi Ken I tried the link to older versions of Google Earth. Your warning to virus check was timely! the latest version of April 2013 has TROJAN HORSE DOWNLOADER embedded in it which was picked up by my AVG Free AV. Is there any way a more prominent warning can be posted in case anyone else tries this download and gets exposed to the threat? Ray Quote
KenB Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 It just goes to show that you cannot be too careful :) I will remove that link from my previous post - thanks for letting us know Ray. Ray1000 Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Hi Ray, Apart from sharing a name with you I have had, and still got, a similar problem with Google Earth on XP Pro. The details are on here ... http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/14921-Video-Card-requirements-for-Google-Earth Ray Quote
PEV Posted September 2, 2013 Author Posted September 2, 2013 Yeh see whay you mean Ray! Think best thing is to forget Google Earth. In any case you can get similar just by using the satelite option from Google Maps. Ray Quote
