I am going to have cook supper Ken so will be back in an hour.

I do not get a boot.ini file option after I type msconfig.<enter> on vista that seems to be a search box. To get a CMD line I have to press the windows button and R. Even then it goes to a screen with a named line in it and refuses my commands. Sorry I cant think straight as I am being pressed for supper - and the errant grandson has still not left where he has gone....supposed to be here by now.

Hi Jim

Even then it goes to a screen with a named line in it and refuses my commands.

Odd ???

However ............... I have done it again !!

The instructions were for Vista .......................... you now have Win7 :)

I must be tired ( that's my excuse )

Download EasyBCD from here:

If prompted - RUN it.

I have just downloaded it from this location and scanned it ........... no malware.

Once installed run it.

Click on "View Settings" and copy what is there to our thread.

Hope this makes sense ?

It makes sense at this end KenB

There are a total of 2 entries listed in the bootloader.

Default: Windows 7

Timeout: 30 seconds

Boot Drive: C:\

Entry #1

Name: Windows 7

BCD ID: {current}

Drive: C:\

Bootloader Path: \Windows\system32\winload.exe

Entry #2

Name: Windows 7

BCD ID: {5d1246e1-135d-11e3-8a77-c92f27affb07}

Drive: D:\

I can't see which is which from here, can you?

Hi Jim

I can't see which is which from here, can you?

Yep - Entry #2

Showing as being on D:\ drive - but we know that there is nothing on that drive.

Also - Entry #1 is showing as "current"

Let's make sure we get the right one.

Click on "Edit Boot Menu" .............it should show 2 entries ..... both Windows 7

One of them will be the default.

Click on the other one to highlight it > click on "Rename" ..........type in ...... Virtual Win7 ...... then Save Settings.

Go back to "View Settings"

Entry #1 should still be Windows 7

Entry #2 should read Virtual Win7

If this is the case we will delete Entry #2

Let me know the results. Please post a copy of "View Settings" again.

By the way - it looks as if I am off line ....... I am not .. I will be here for half an hour or so :)

Thanks KenB, that has been a great help.

That has deleted the extraneous copy of windows 7 that I put on there with all it's problems. Since the lad won't be back until tomorrow at the earliest it looks as if we have got it up and running. I have moved the boot up back to the hard disk from the CD drive although it still stops for an <enter> at that same step in the boot sequence. I have downloaded MSEssentials but I'll now go look see to find it.

thank you again for your patience, it must be very frustrating trying to teach an old dog new tricks.

It shouldn't do that ???

Please post the "View Settings" again.

Also we can change the time that it hangs waiting to boot the default.

Do the following:

Click on "Edit Boot Menu" and change the "Countdown from" whatever the setting is to 2

This will then wait for just 2 seconds before booting.

Click on "Save Settings"

Not at all Jim - at least you can follow instructions :)

But i bet you actually enjoyed it? :)

and just in time for the Grandsons arrival.

Any malware problems on the system will be non existent now that a reformat/reinstall has been achieved.

Thanks Pete :)

But i bet you actually enjoyed it?

Actually - yes I did

I am sure Jim did too :)

Jim

It is past midnight here so I may not be around for much longer tonight.

MS Essentials will do a good job.

Let me know what happens after changing the delay to 2 seconds :)

EDIT:

You could change the delay to 0 if you wish ........... it will just go straight to the boot sequence.

Thanks very much both of you, all is well for the start of his teacher training course at uni next week.

I wish I'd had the same thing available to me in 1967!

( it's now 26 minutes passed 2 in the morning here:wave:)

cheers

We must be a similar age Jim :)

Which Uni and what course is he doing Jim ?

[ I used to teach before I retired :) ]

Let it run for a day or two just to confirm that things are OK.

Is there anything else that we can do with SWMBO's machine before you pass it on ?

Can you access the internet with it for instance ?

Is the webcam working?

Hi again KenB, so you was in teaching as well. I wonder what your subject was, technology maybe, IT?

I was in the Automobile Industry until Mrs Thatcher's policies in 1996. The 1965 I mentioned was when I went for a TTC in London at 25.

The grand son has his degree in computer science and will be doing a TTC which is school based rather than the Lecture Theatre (as was mine) His partner is going to do a BA in eduction at the same uni (Sussex I believe) and they will be taking the Dell and the laptop with them.

I hope your stay in France was fruitful.

Hi Jim

Good guess - I taught Technology specialising in Materials and Electronics :)

We are the same age .... 1950 ??

TTC which is school based

This is a far better way of getting qualified ........... as long as the support in the school is good !!

I used to be the one who looked after any Uni students who were attached to our department ..... I took no prisoners but those who wanted to get on and learn did :)

Wish him and his partner luck.

It is a lottery - get into a good school with decent kids ... they will be fine.

What they don't want is to go to work and every day is a battle !!

Recipe for stress !!

1942 so I am a bit older :)

Much as SWMBO was advising - she was in social work.

Wish him and his partner luck.

Thanks

Yes I can quite see that and one of the reasons why I chose to work in Kent.

I'll pass on your good wishes, he has yet to tell me whether the webcam is operational. No doubt he may well leave it too late for me to do anything about it :)

cheers for now
