Dead CPU fan

Hello Chaps and Chapettes,

This one has me flummoxed , my American friend has a old Dell DE510 series desktop and the CPU fan is dead now the pc was booting while it was dead now it's not , we have gone through BIOS and disabled cpu warning etc and still no joy a recon tower has been ordered to replace but since my friend is disabled and relies on this I wonder if you guys have any ideas ?

Hello Armageddon, let me see if I got this right:

 

Your friends CPU fan died, but the PC booted up anyway for a while, and now it wont?

 

I would guess that the broken fan has overheated the CPU and damaged it.

Booting a PC with a malfunctioning CPU fan can be fatal to your computer, though it's gotten a lot better than it used to be.

Disabling the CPU warning might have made your problem worse.

 

My advice is to try to find out whether the CPU is broken or not, and if it is, replace it.

If the CPU is working correctly, start going through the usual "boot-failure-troubleshooting-list".

Yes it will boot to BIOS , but I seem to have nailed it for now while her recon tower arrives , I have reneabled CPU warning etc and moved the case fan wires to the cpu one this has worked to a point that it boots and works yes its hot but I've seen hotter , I must stress I talked my friends son through this over the phone and also stated in any normal circumstance I wouldn't do this I'd replace the fan

Sounds like a good 'temporary' fix :)

 

I once tried a passive cooling system, pretty much how you describe this one, big case fan running slowly, no CPU fan just a big heatsink. It worked until the CPU was used heavily, then all my great ideas went out of the window - overheating and shutdown!
