Hi and welcome to ExTS

except the connection that comes from my dvdrw drive to add a second

Are you suggesting that you remove the DVD Drive and replace it with the IDE drive ?

or

Do you wish to add the drive to the existing IDE cable - assuming that there is a connection. ( see below )

Either way will be OK.

You may need to check the jumper at the back of the drive ........... depends what you wish to do.

There is an alternative and that is to buy an IDE to USB external enclosure and put the drive in this.

This would give you a portable drive.

A bit safer if you are using it for backups.

Prices vary: ( not suggesting eBay ..... just using as an example )

thanks for your reply.... the cable at the back of the dvd drive is exactly like the one you had pictured.... i deally i only need the drive as it has data on it from my last pc, so ill give it a go.... i know about making sure the pins are in the right place to make it a slave drive... was just a bit confused as to whether i could couple it alongside the dvd drive as its the only ide cable there

Just one thing which may be worth a mention, as the drive will be connected to the cable for the CD/DVD drive, it may be best to check in the BIOS set up in this instance, that the main hard drive is selected as the first boot device.

Most are set as default to look at the CD/DVD drive for a boot disk first, but the BIOS may see your old drive and try to boot from it, most likely it won't, leaving you confused as to why the computer won't boot up.

Good point Nev :)

Just a thought - do you have a Molex connection that you can use to power the drive that you are adding ?

If not - use the one from the DVD Drive as a temporary measure :)
