So after 3 years of my HP Slimline working without fail, something finally went wrong. I replaced the cooling unit roughly 5 months ago from a standard fan to a liquid cooled unit. It's been working like a charm for the past 5 months but two days ago the system began making a revving noise from the power cell. Other than that, the computer sounded like it was starting up fine... I say "sounded" because no video was coming up on the monitor. So I couldn't tell if it was actually booting up. I replaced the powercell and got the exact same result. Revving noise from the powercell and no display. Any idea what the issue could be? Did the motherboard go?

Thanks,

Biscuit

Just to clear up first, Powercell = PSU?

If you replaced the PSU, this shouldn't be the cause of the problem.

A revving sound in my experience is a fan issue, and then no display as well as the noise may indicate a graphics card issue, if you have one installed.

Are you able to check all fans in the system and locate if it is one of them causing the noise? Use the back end of a pencil to block each fan on start up, it will take time, but will let you know if there is an issue with the fans, no noise = possibe faulty fan, if you remove the pencil the fan will automatically start, so no damage will come to the components.

As for the display, can you check all connections inside the case and cables connecting from case to the monitor? If no luck try another monitor.

Let us know how you get on.

=============

Hi and welcome to ExTS

Does your PSU look like this?

The "revving noise" is obviously from the cooling fan ( if it is coming from the PSU )

I suggest that you remove all hardware from the motherboard ( RAM / Video Card / Wireless Adapter etc )

Disconnect the Hard Drive and DVD Drive power and also the data cables from the motherboard end.

Leave only the PSU connected to the motherboard.

( further info - click here )

Switch on - do you get the same over-revving of the fan ?

Do you get any POST beeps ( assuming that you did before ) ?

If things are normal now - connect the Monitor and try again ( you will obviously need to put the Video Card back if you have one :) )

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
